From vBulletin.com:

vBulletin 3.6 Beta 1

It gives me great pleasure to announce the release of vBulletin 3.6 Beta 1. vBulletin 3.6 Beta 1 is available for all licensed customers to download from the Members' Area now.

vBulletin 3.6 contains a large number of new features, many of which have been included as a direct result of customer feedback. Over the past week we have been revealing some of these new features on a daily basis in this thread (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=186803), so if you have not already seen it you should head over there to take a look.

This code has been running well on vBulletin.com for the past week, so we are confident that the code is robust and relatively free of problems, but customers should bear in mind that this is a public beta, not a certified 'stable' release so the following caveats apply:
Beta software is unsupported and you install beta versions at your own risk.
Some minor bugs remain unresolved at this time, so beta software should not be on production sites.
You should always back up your database fully before attempting to install beta software.
If you choose to install this version, you should be aware that we plan to release new beta versions in rapid succession as bugs are fixed and holes are plugged. Do not install this beta version if you are not willing or able to keep up-to-date with new releases.
The ImpEx import system does not support the 3.6 code yet, and will not support it until the release of 3.6.0 (stable).Installation / Upgrade
If you are accustomed to the install and upgrade procedure used by vBulletin 3.5 then the 3.6 install and upgrade process will be familiar to you.
Please refer to an earlier release announcement for full instructions.

Hacking / Plugins
While there have not been extensive changes to the underlying architecture of vBulletin 3.6 from 3.5, it is possible that certain hooks may have changed. Therefore you should check with the author of whatever plugins and products to attach to your vBulletin installation to inquire about their compatibility with vBulletin 3.6. Plugin authors should be assured that we do not anticipate major code changes between the Beta 1 code and the final 3.6.0 code, so plugins written for or adapted to 3.6 compatibility should still work with the final code.

Javascript / AJAX Problems
Many of the Javascript files for vBulletin 3.6 have changed. However, if templates are reverted or adapted correctly there should be no issue with cached old Javascript files, as we have implemented a system that should force clients to reload Javascript files after an upgrade. If you discover what you believe to be a Javascript problem, please ensure that you are not using cached files by doing a ctrl+F5 hard refresh before reporting it as a bug.

Reporting Bugs
Please use the vBulletin 3.6 Bug Tracker (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/bugs36.php) to report any bugs you find in vBulletin 3.6.

For more information you can view this thread:
http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=187654

As for releasing modifications for 3.6 at vbulletin.org, Brad is currently working on allowing this. You should be able to release 3.6 modifications once Brad is finished.

Enjoy. :)

Since the architecture from 3.5 to 3.6 hasnt changed much, does that mean that most of the hacks currently for 3.5 should still work with no problem :)

That's what I expect having not been given any specific warnings like we were with the archive change in 3.5.4.

But that's what I'm off to test right now on a test board. Not going live yet myself.

I upgraded my localhost and most of the hacks I have there seem to be working fine ;) so yay

Still I can't upgrade because I have too many hacks and modifications installed :p

Dan

Unstable for Jelsoft is usually more stable than a "gold" copy of a Microsoft product :p

Ziki

Still doesn't give me the ability to upgrade :p

im kinda new to vb. my site has been up only about a month. how long does it usauly take before the complete stable version is released? weeks? months? im assuming i should avoid until its ready and been tested.

Is it also safe to say that there will be even more template reverting once its beta 2, rc1..2...etc?

Im not touching this until its a final.

The length of time before the stable version is released depends on the number of betas and RC's that are required.

If you have a test site somewhere (on your PC or on your server in a password protected directory) then you can install it there and get used to how it works.

I wouldn't install a beta version onto a live board as there could be a number of betas and bugs in the code.

I think i'm going to go ahead and put it on my normal forums-Is this risky?

I will run this on a test board tomorrow and see which of my hacks work and which don't.

teatree, I wouldn't recommend putting a Beta on a live forum, it isn't worth the hassle, the full version will probably be out in a few weeks, maybe sooner so it is worth the wait. You would be doing your users a favour.

Yea, it could destroy your site, so i you really want to do so you should backup whole site first

Question... are we permitted to use the same vB install that we purchased, to set up a test forum as well?

Dan

You can run one test board with each licence you own. But it has to be private.

Cant seem to get infraction working :(

Dan

You have to enable it in the vBulletin Options ;) then you have to revert your templates for it to show it.

Cant find it for the life of me. Can you give me some idea where on options it is?

Just keep searching for infractions with ctrl+f and it should be found easily.

Infractions are controlled via usergroup permissions. The only option is to specify a forum for infractions posts to be placed into. That isn't required to use infractions though.

Well ive undone any changes to my styles, selected forums yet still on posts there is no option to warn. Is there a special way to get the yellow and red card?

There's only one way to find out :)

I am already playing around with it on a local test install.

Once I'm done installing and checking my own mods I'll try out some others for compatibility....

Been playing with it on my dev machine, and already see that there are isssues with vBAdvanced (CMPS/Links/Gallery) but have gotten all to work (albeit in a rather limited fashion)
Really impressed with the improvements, but obviously gonna have to wait a while to publish it 'live'.

Yeah, they changed some things behind the scenes.

Some of my mods worked flawlessly right after installing, other need some fixing....

I didn't even try to look at porting my styles yet....

Heck, I figure real coders don't wait :D

I'm diving right in and trying to track down and help squash any bugs I can find. So far, the only issue I've had was the compatibility of one pre-release mod. Upgrades are fun :D

this will be a good reason to clean up everything. :D

One thing i'd like to know however... If i delete all the files under my forums folder and upload vb 3.6 will i lose all the posts and stuff?

Or will i only lose the styles and the hacks that plugins use?
