View Full Version : vB.org Union

Dean C

Just an idea to throw off the top of my (already sleepy) head. A union for vB.org members, where the union would represent the general feelings of vB.org members and present those views to the staff. Should the union feel that it's proposals aren't being adequately considered, then strike action could be taken.

And just to clarify, it's an idea. I have no views on it as of yet.

It is a good idea though! :) Considering we lost our liaison.

I can envision it.. union splinter groups and sub-groups.

"The Union" (tm) rep walks around with a "Vote Boofo!" sign. He posts things like "The .Org is your friend," "Trust the Org!" and has ketchup stains on his tshirt.

"The Anti-Union Union" (tm) rep walks up with his "Vote Princeton, he'll protect you!" sign. He posts anti-AmyKhar messages, whines about how the community could be much better with real customer service reps and has mustard stains on his tshirt.

"The WeUsedToBeUnionButHateThemNow Union" (tm) goes around spreading propoganda about all other unions. They delete and lock posts from "The Anti-Union" (tm) folks and change their sigs to "The WeUsedToBeUnionButHateThemNow Union" (tm) links. Oh yeah, and they have mayo stains on their tshirts.

Will the madness never end?!?!

Ok after a little thought on the idea today, my idea is based purely on the principle that the current situation of members creating threads to propose things isn't done in a diplomatic way and has resorted to name-calling, thread closures, and discussions going round and round in circles with the same things being said again. How about a collection of vB.org users who can congregate, anyone can join the "group" (union as I first called it), and union members would elect a representative, and have a little meeting once a month to raise any concerns, and then the views could be presented to the staff in a sensible and democratic way :)

Maybe add a couple smilies to cheer things up?

Personally I think it's great to see members here with the brains and guts to think things through.
Innovative thinking requires an open mind and a willingness to accept that many ideas are dead-end and down-right dumb.
Sometimes ideas can be presented and sound ridiculous, are put to the side, and some time later they become realized.

Ya gotta remember, every single one of us is travelling down uncharted roads, we'll make mistakes, and hopefully learn from others mistakes :)

Gotta go, but first ...

I'd like to extend a hearty kudos to everyone here who blazed the trails and showed what could be done with this awesome software.

Don't know much about Unions eah? This would only work for vB employees, not product owners. And how exactly were you planning on going "on strike" - by not using their product (which you already paid for)? You would be better off starting something like a buyers group, where your members could buy the product at reduced (quanity) pricing and have extras included that vB doesn't offer their customers.

That's exactly what I'm talking about. The general user on this site really has no complaints, it's the people who share their work that do as has been made clear in the last few weeks. And I don't think the staff is in any position to liaison via one person to 50+ people who contribute, it should be entirely the other way around with one union trying to represent the coders to the few staff.

Why? I'm sure more members would just add more content. I know there are several mods I have created that I could have posted but other people have already posted the same or very similar mods.

Or what about - if you don't like this site send one PM with your constructive criticism and all your suggestions on how they can be resolved in a PM to an Admin and if they don't respond how you'd like set your own site up just as you want it to be?

Only in hindsight. It would hurt the members first, and then after a few months they wouldn't come here, and THAT is what would then hurt vB. You would need to organize before this had any real effect. First start a site where all the coders could post their mods once they removed them from here (hasn't this been done before?). Then the members won't get hurt as much, but how would you contact the members and let them know about the new site? But all of this only gives you some leverage. It doesn't make you a union per se. The coders have every right to organize and do what's in their best interest. Doing it in a fashion that won't turn the members against you is going to be the hardest step. These things take time.[/QUOTE]

One or two average coders will not sustain this site. Not for very long anyway.

You think that the coders here want to destroy this site? If it wasn't for this site I probably would have never ended up at university and I probably never would have learned how to program. I have a strong affinity for this site and I've earned a hell of a lot of money for a young man as a result of my earlier years here. I want what's best for vBulletin.org, but as it stands there has been a lot of unrest and the fire's have been put out by promoting those who were there starting them in the first place. Now I disagree with a lot of things on this site as it stands and I think people still do too. So that is why I proposed this idea of a union, where members could gather their ideas and propose them to staff instead of having these long, dull, monotonous threads of name-calling, only for a couple of the staff to come in and try and calm things down by mocking themselves.

There are serious issues here that need to be discussed in a diplomatic manner, and I honestly feel that having some form of representation as a whole would strongly benefit the members here who want to fight for change.

Why would it be one or two or only average? Since we are talking unions here market theory would say when that increasing demand will be met with increasing supply... ;)

.

So that's been tried and those sites didn't work, they failed? If so then it would indicate that their ideas about how the site should be run were wrong. Godd job then that vBulletin.org didn't listen to that advice!
