Welcome to the first public look at vBulletin 3.6 at vBulletin.com!

This is the first of a number of posts we will be making over the coming week introducing you to what's new in this new version of vBulletin.

Take some time to wander around the forums and you'll find new features and useful changes throughout the system. Of course, you won't be able to see everything until you play with it as an administrator and there is far too much to squeeze into a single announcement, so we'll be posting new information daily. Be sure to check back each day for an update!

Let's start with an important change...

System Requirements
vBulletin 3.6 now requires PHP 4.3.3 or later and MySQL 4.0.16 or later. These minimum versions are still several years old, so the vast majority of people should still meet the requirements. Check the main page of your admin control panel if you're not sure what versions of PHP and MySQL are on your server!

Check out the original thread for more information and an extensive feature list being released daily.

not here at .org sweetie, it's over on .com

Wayne, you might want to add this to your original post above. It does make it sound like .org is running 3.6

I think I just soiled my pants :p A lot of nice features that were previously only available as plugins/hacks I use on a number of my sites will now be standard features. This is going to make things, so much easier :D

I have also done my fair share of pants pooping. Since this site if FULL of coding masters, does anyone know about upgrading from 3.5.4 to 3.6 with installed hacks and modified templates?

Will one have to reinstall them all like we did from vB3.0 -> vB3.5?

Is this a major feature release?

In a sense that it will impact our mods in a big way or are the core functions more or less the same (plugin/hook/vars)?

crap, i just checked my PM's there and someone asked for access to a CCbill account so they could integreate it. To bad that was 3+ months ago and is probably useless now ;)

Will one have to reinstall them all like we did from vB3.0 -> vB3.5?It depends on how extensive the code changes are - From what I can gather it's going to be a pretty major upgrade, so I would assume that the majority of 3.5.X mods/plugins are going to have to be overhauled before they can be used with 3.6.

I'm not sure as it is so much as new code as new enhancements added, isn't it?

Andrew
06-03-2006, 12:34 AM
It depends if what they've shown us so far is all that they've added - My assumption was based partly on the fact that they made such a jump in version numbers. If it were just a bunch of minor enhancements, I would have expected just a 3.5.5 or something. It seems that in the past, the big version jumps have brought about fairly large changes in the code.

Hopefully they won't make any major code changes until 4.0. Updating hacks all the time can get tiresome. ;)

Amen Zues. Hopefully the upgrade won't be too harsh on the hacks.

I would doubt that the code changes will be too significant otherwise it would have been 4.0 and not another branch of the 3 series

All the best hacks too. Upgrading for me is going to need some serious de-hacking as everything they have added I have installed as a hack.

/me wonders if the best route would be to uninstall my present hacks prior to installing 3.6 when it arrives (for best upgrade). This is looking great!

It has a few things Im very keen on :)

- Infraction system
- Multi quote
- Options backup and restore (might save me reinstalling my test forum regularly)
- Signature permissions

A lot of the rest looks very good too :D

But more than anything they have improved I want hooks in templates....
Please.....

If they keep this up, there won't be a need for most of the hackers & hacks here.

Now isn't there a famous quote about the world will only ever need seven computers or something like that? :)

I'm sure there will still be great features and ideas that the mod coders will come up with.

Still its looking way cool.

Update is posted. Looks like this may be the last one, since there was no "tune in tomorrow" type of ending to it.

That's where they get the ideas in some cases. It's a mutually benificial relationship for all.

Hopefully during the public beta stages most of the 3.5 hacks here get tested for 3.6... my board is also heavily hacked. :D:D

It's now available for download. Where to mod authors post info regarding whether their mod will work on 3.6 or not?
