I've created a new masthead for my website, and I'm not entirly happy with it, but I'm not sure what's wrong with it either. (if that makes any sense)
Any graphics guys want to offer some sugguestions for improvment?
I love all of it except the welcome/login box... maybe a different/darker color for that part.
Great work. :)

Thanks. :)
I've changed the color of the login box and also added some 3D effects to it.
New images are attached. I'm not attached to either color, and am open to sugguestions.

Wow. That's pretty sweet. :)
You wouldn't happen to have a PSD of that, would you?

Looks fine to me, but perhaps a more styled font (not referring to the 'X' but the rest)?

Fourth Revision:
gio~logist-
I've added a "login" button, and toned down the secondary X. The user name and password boxes were shortened a bit to make room for the button.
I was concerned that the second White X was competing with the X in the main logo- What do you think? If you think it was better with the white I'll change it back...

Nice modification gio.
I would use amore generic text type but keep that "X". That said, Each variation that's being posted is looking better each time.

Try making the button match more with a dark blue background and white text. Also, try skewing it so that it goes with the style.

I think if you designed the base image as a vector shape and added two anchor points and expanded to create a curve (firstly skewing it of course) this alone would give it a nice shape. Just a thought.
Example: Something like this (ignore the colouring) http://img419.imageshack.us/img419/5921/visualcurve1bp.gif

I think it takes up too much space.

The button, or the whole thing?

Not convinced the blue button works... maybe to dark?

Try making that button a little darker and the text bolder, or make the button white with back text.

Much better, it just looks a bit blurry. Are you sure you're using a smooth font and stuff?

The font on the button is "copperplate"(which is what I'm using for my links/buttons as well).
It's 3 Pt, regular (as opposed to 'light' or 'bold'). AA was set to sharp.
I've change it to smooth, attached below.
There are no layer style/effects for the text.

I think loosing the background pattern wouldn't be such a bad thing. Go with something like a gradient so that the text is better highlighted. I dunno, I'm still half asleep so my judgment on the background could possibly be unsound.

The background isn't to bad, but a gradient could be useful.

... the whole thing takes up too much space
... the background is "too busy"; you should calm it down a bit
... too many x's ... I'm guessing you will have x's as statusicons etc ... to a viewer it may look like one BIG X .. a BIG X could be a negative thing (eg. cross out)
... minimize your use of fonts; 2-3 fonts max

What's wrong with the knobs?

I say give it a shot with the whole style. Lets see how it looks altogether. Things look different when they finally come together ;)

I toned down the background in the header and added a gradient overlay.
I've been trying to make a style that matches the header, but have been unsuccessful. Can't tell if it's too busy, or the colors don't work, or both. I'm guessing both :)
Any sugguestions?

Actually, I like the style that you have now. It's the Header that needs to be re-worked; it lacks the "umph!" My suggestion is that you re-work the Header so that it utilizes the colors of your forum.

I'm not to fond of the purple, perhaps a black or something would be better?

* Reduced all text to two fonts (3 if you count the 'x')
* Changed color scheme to match existing scheme on the forum
* Altered effects on "LiveXchange" header text, to make it stand out more
* Added radial blur to knobs behind "LiveXchange" header text
* Altered outer background
* Added grid to inner background
* Attempted to fix the log-in button again (any way to anti-alias the 'stroke' effect?)
* Added all main navigation 'links' to main menu bar for spacing purposes

It's now live, for the most part (a couple things need tweaking). I'm not sure what to do with the Alt 1 and Alt 2 colors though... any ideas?
