Hello everybody,
Do you think one of you 1337 coders of vBulletin could make a modification entitled 'vbNews.' It's sole purpose is so it would allow webmasters to syndicate topics in forums as news onto their website (website integration).

You mean much like the news module on vB powerded portals like vBAdvanced?
Every thread in a specific forum gets shown as news post on the website?
But for external pages that have nothing to with the vB?
Sounds intersting....

I'd imagine this would be something like a Portal or Article system, somewhat of a vB extension. Not everyone wants a portal or is willing to spend for GARS. While WebTemplates and vBadvanced can be customized to pull posts as news it takes a bit of coding knowledge or at least some understanding of vB's PHP protocol. With the Latest Threads and Posts available I'm surprised that there isn't a demand for a News request.

IPB has a modification called... err what's it called... SSIPlus (http://mods.invisionize.com/db/index.php/f/747). But, basically, it allows you to stream news, statisitics, and other crap onto your website. Has not anybody thought of this? Very useful... it's a must!

I'm sorry, but I think you need to start your own thread for that. :) This is about a script to pull information out from the forums for use on another non-forum page.

I'm going to be creating a News Content Management System a little down the road. My hack will take a group/list of forums that news resides in, displays them in an organized fashion, categorizs them by to the admin's choosing, and displays them accordingly. I don't know if this is what you are after mrTip, but I am going to create it so that it can be displayed to non-vb pages as well as standard templates.

Christian, now you've done it :D You've just doomed yourself to numerous bumps of this thread saying 'oooh I want that! Is it done yet?'

LOL, why do I have a sickening feeling in my gut? hehe
I'm asking for it, aren't I...
Seriously, I have so many projects I want to work on and I don't know if I can do them all, (I've got about 4-5 not even listed on my signature that I want to add - but are lower priority) - should I just post all my projects somewhere and see if others might be interested in helping me or would rather take it over? I'm still working on my first project, lol. hehe (almost done though).

Hey, christianb. I don't suppose you can make the News Content Management System (NCMS) a priority? Ahh, wishfull thinking. :D

Just an update - as I've played around with it some since I've had a little bit of time (spare time) I've finished the AdminCP - that part is 100% finished and works. The templates, phrases, etc. all work. Just got to figure out how to display it now. I'm stuck there. I'd say I'm 30% finished now, but technically I could be closer to 80% done - give or take 10%.
The weather hack is up for grabs. I'm donating my work to whomever will wants to take it up. :P

The thumbnail is the only screenshot I have atm. It will have its own page. Right now I have an issue with it displaying it, but then again, my time has been very strapped and I've only been working on it when I can (which has been very limited) :) - but - I've been working on this and the vBBible hack. What can you do when you work 10 hours a day, and then go home to a full-time father job ;) :P It's coming though :D

It's displaying now - got all the queries fixed, thanks to sabret00the. Did a bunch of template work to it... added a few things to it, but still have a couple bugs to it.
Bugs to work out:
- Forumtitle only displays once - for first forumID
- No space after last displayed result or in between different queries
- Last posted by: - still trying to figure out how to display correct link via query (currently using postuserid -yes I know its wrong)
- Issue with linking back to source based on number of characters misaligned. Not sure why?

When it comes out, it will probably work for 3.6. (You can see the hack's progression in my signature).

anyone want to beta test? PM me
Actually,
I'm looking for something akin to this. But instead of posting all or nothing from a thread (I've already got sections doing this on our site) I would like to be able to
1. Have users suggest posts to publish on the front page as special comments. They should be displayed as a real front page text (not vb style) but with an "X comments" line that once clicked takes you to the forum.
2. Have mod's approve #1
I would like to use it for www.atheist.net. I'm not gonna need your vbbible thingy though ;)

Are you wanting something kind of like a function similar to the report bad post - but instead the function would be more of a suggestion for posts to publish?
That would be the deluxe version! Perhaps poping up a form that lets you suggest/input the headline/summary text to use on the front page.
Moderators (or whatever group assigned to approve submissions) would get an PM to vist the submitted list, perhaps change texts, and then approve/disapprove submissions.
What I have learned in past 5 years running the sites, is that it is veeeery hard to get members to contribute with front page material on a regular basis. They either think that they haven't got what it takes, or simply feel more comfortable shooting from the hip inside the forum. But sometimes they do write insightful, coherent, and articulate standalone posts that is very well suited to be singled out and published on the front page.
Something similar would be great for news links to external media. Perhaps a special markup inside posts, that once used submits a link/summary text to the same publish list that the Mods also can approve and choose to publish as link to external news.
A small toolbox (with template) like vbexternal would then allow webmasters to integrate list and content into front page. RSS feeds would be nice, etc.
Anyway...
The general idea is to get your community to help out, without them actually feeling like working :)

This is definately something to consider as I'm looking to add or compliment what I've already done.
Keep me (us) posted :) I would like to beta test such a post submit feature with or without the news link submission.
