This is my first time trying to install a game. We have ibProArcade 2.5.4.
I added the file to forums/arcade/tar. In admin cp went to add new games, found it, clicked install. I get this error:

/home/idadmin/public_html/forums/arcade/tar is write-protected. Please change CHMOD to 0777 via FTP.

All of the other games have some numeric thing of 755 (or something like that). How do I fix that and if I change it will it conflict with past scores/games or anything else?

1) upgrade to ibProArcade v2.5.6+
2) use your FTP-Client to change folder-permissions to 0777

Since I'm new to all this, I'm a little nervous about upgrading/installing anything big. I just did the Plaza and messed up the board somehow (nothing major). It took me a few days to fix that.

How do I change the folder permissions? I use CoffeeCup Direct.

With my ftp-client, I just right-click the folder and there's some place where I can make 0777 permissions. :)

I don't see that. When I click on permissions, I see "read" "write" "execute" and a numeric area. It won't let me change the numeric part.

ok, set read write and execute to yes for all. This should change the numeric part to 777 for you.

Yes, as peterska said, setting read, write, and execute to yes for all should change the numeric part to 777 for you...Or you may notice a little field that has numbers like 755, or 666, etc...You can simply backspace that number out and type in 777 and that should automatically check all the options to yes...

To change these attributes, open up your ftp client and browse to the directory where your tar folder is, right click on the folder and you should see either 'Attributes' or 'CHMOD Options' click that and set the number to 777...Hope i made sense...Be well -

It wouldn't let me change the numbers, but once I checked all the fields, it changed the numbers it self. I also had to change arcade/ images, arcade/tar, arcade/gamedata/ to what you said and it worked. :D Just changing the arcade folder didn't work for some reason.

Thank you very much!

Might I also suggest to create a test forum to learn how to upgrade these types of things. I do it for mine and it also lowers the time the site is down cause I already know the procedure to install various plugins.
