Too many queries or constant attacks?

These days I get quite a lot database error mails (sometimes 4000) with the reason that I exceeded the max questions limit. That limit is set to 50.000/hour.
I recently got defaced and that was after a day with LOADS of such mails.
My question is: Does that have something to do with the attack or my site just makes lots of queries?
How can I find out what causes so many queries and remove it?

If it helps, my site has a lot of mods and some more than 1100 members and 70.000 posts.

Probably your site makes a lot of queries to the mysql db, that might be part of your problem. Best way to find out what script is making the most queries is to install vBMicrostats by TECK or some similar modifaction and at the bottom of the page it will show you how many queries where needed to generate the page, I've noticed an average 15 on most pages on my own site.
