The automerging of posts is extremly annoying. If I come back an hour or two later, and have a completly different thought, I want it to be in it's own post, not edited into the previous one. It should time out after 10-15 minuites and let you create a new post.

The automerging of posts is to prevent bumping of threads. It is unlikely that this will be removed.
^^
That would be more harm than good, IMHO. I agree, it can get annoying..but can and would lead to excessive and unnecessary 'bumps'.

I find it quite annoying, more than once I've gone back to a thread to add things the next day - and the posts get automerged. I'm not convinced bumping is a major issue, esp with all the new staff, but it's not me you have to convince. :)

of course when you actually want it to merge it doesn't which caught me out earlier.

You wouldn't believe how often people will bump a thread, automerging means we can concentrate on issues that are much more approprite. This has come up a few times before but in general seen to be more good than evil.

If the setting is user group specific, couldn't you make an "unbumpable" user group that repeat bumpers could get banned into?

Moving members into that group would be as much work as moderating the double posts..... ;)

Can you put coders in a group with no double post merge at least? We often answer questions in multiple posts over a period of time. Not only does the double post merge hide the fact that a new answer has been added to the thread, but it doesn't even send a new post email to those that have subscribed. I've mentioned this before.

Auto-Merge should be disable for all Modification threads. Other than that, I really don't see a reason to disable this feature due to the large amount of times that our bumping rule is abused.

Yes, it doesn't auto merge in Modification threads. :)

Why does that not surprise me? ;)

Because you're not easily surprised? :p

You do want us to answer questions in the support forums don't you? I answer more questions there than in my own hack threads.

How often do you need to double post in a support thread?

ah that would explain it then. I had to go back and manually merge my two posts as I was posting via wap at the time and it only allows 160 characters.

How often do you need to double post in a support thread?
Sometimes you post a question and while your waiting for help you try to fix it yourself. Often times I end up fixing half of the issue, and want to post an update. for example:
I tried these steps, and now it's no longer giving me that error message, but It's giving this one instead
And if you simply edit your previous post, people who have already read your question may not read it again to see if anything has changed in the initial post. But they might if there were a new post.
This is important because the other person may not have known the answer to the initial question, but could give a solution to fix the 2nd error that's occuring, as a result of the user trying to fix it on thier own.
