Have you ever been in the middle of a really long post, but something comes up and you have to stop writing before it's finished? Wouldn't it be nice if you could save that post as a draft and come back to it later?

I'm really surprised that I can't find anything like this, and I'm pretty sure that my old ikonboard had it. If anyone can create a mod like this I'm sure it would be pretty popular. Of course maybe I haven't looked hard enough and it already exists. If it does please let me know.

Cheers,

Andrew

Yes, this would also come in handy for users who don't click on "Remember Me" when signing in.

I had a new user log in, lots of folks welcomed him, he typed up a long bio explaining who he was... and the session timed-out while he crafted his message.

When he was done and ready to submit, he had been logged out (the current time-out is set to 20 minutes I believe) and therefore he lost his entire post.

He hasn't been back since.

:tired:

As an admin, I shouldn't have to make my time-out longer for this; vBulletin should be smarter and either save drafts, or work around this issue somehow. Gmail does it well, auto-saves every few minutes...

I also agree this would be an excellent hack if it can be done :)

How did you know he was typing all of that?

I emailed him a few days later (he's an old friend) and asked why he disappeared.

I received an angry email a couple days ago from a new member who also lost a long post because he was logged out automatically without his knowledge. He forgot to click "remember me" when he logged in, but he didn't know he was logged out until he tried to submit his lengthy message.

Some kind of a save to draft feature would really be nice, especially if it did it automatically.

not a bad idea... just found out how to do that here. (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=156515)

Also, for the record, when I was searching I found a "save drafts" hack for vB 3.0. (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=77659) (Perhaps this could be ported to 3.5.)

quick soultion maybe, by default click the "Remember Me" box?It used to be, and should never have been changed. First thing I did was change it back.

Actually, it made a lot of sense to change. The premise was that if you want to be remembered, you have to check the box one time and you're done. But, if you didn't want to be remembered, you used to have to uncheck the box every time.

Browsers just need to handle forms and the back button better. The way they handle things now is not at all intuitive.

I suppose that rationale makes sense if some vB features didn't "break" when someone takes a long time completing an action. It's perceived as a timeout and the unremembered user is effectively "logged out." Lengthy posts, high scores in an arcade, all get lost. Very frustrating, especially for a newbie user who wouldn't even notice (or understand) that checkbox in the first place.

Think about a new forum member who has never been on a forum before. A checkbox that says "Remember Me?" makes little sense to them, and might even come across as scarily Orwellian. They are already overwhelmed by all the nuances of the registration procedure. I don't think it's likely that they'd check a box that says "Remember Me?" and they sure as hell wouldn't be able to foresee they problems they'll encounter by leaving it unchecked.

Instead the change caters to the few users who actually don't want to be remembered. (It saves them a single click.)

IMHO, that's one step forward for a few, and two steps back for the community at large.

Thanks for posting the link to check remember me by default. That saved me a lot of searching.

If someone did this for vB3.0, surely it could be done for 3.5.

Cheers,

Andrew

Both short and long posts I often copy and paste it to EditPad. :)
