Changing catagory URL's to something simple

For example on my board if i visit a catagory i go to something like:

http://www.hiven.net/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=4

However what i want is something just like this website has:

http://www.eaforums.com/forums/

Whereby when you visit a catagory the url is something along the lines of:

http://www.eaforums.com/forums/announcements/

Can you tell me how this is done please?

It is done through mod rewrite. The closest I could find on a quick search was this:
