we opened a board less than a month ago, and things were great until last week when our host told us that we needed to upgrade servers. (450 members) We decided to go with a semi-dedicated server package. Since then, the board has gone down 4 times, all info posted from sunday at 12:30 pm to monday at 6:15 pm was lost, and the board has been down(hardware problems) since yesterday at 5:00pm. They proclaim that they changed everything in the server but the hard drive. I know this crap does not take that long. I am obviously changing host companies, so I need suggestions, and advice on how to deal with the current company. in addition, I need to know the steps that need to be taken to move the board to a new host.
Thanks In advance,
Tim

How many posts/threads did you have and what was your average rate of activity? I think they were trying to fob you off and get more cash in the bag, my forum has almost 900 members, and no need for a semi-dedicated yet, running on good old shared

I'm not sure on the post count, but we generally have 15-30 members on and several guests viewing. We have a photopost gallery and run vb pager, so that takes up some room. I also found out that they are a reseller, and I'm assuming they were in it for the bait-and switch.

I have 4000 members, half a million posts and 25,000 threads. I have over 75 plugins, products and hacks installed including Photopost vBGallery, vBa Links, GAB, GARS, GAL, CMPS, vBShout, vB Pager - and I use a reseller package which costs me $30 a month - they've never said a word to me about activity levels or strain on the server, so I'm thinking your hosts are talking out of their' collective arses.
I'm using Go Daddy.... on a fully dedicated server.... have 2100 members and maybe anywhere from 30-50 on at a time.... I had to keep upgrading servers because it was going down... unless they're playin games?

can i ask which hosting company you use, and what's your average server load?

I ran away from home when I found out my mother was running her site on Go Daddy. I'm sorry, but that place does a good job of selling domain names and other goodies, but when it comes to hosting.. errrrgh!
And you are right, they don't want you playing GAMES on GoDaddy.. try getting some support for your database there when it comes to LOCKING or UNLOCKING...
I'm currently using, EZCGI.com (not too expensive, pretty good features, and they have always been there when I called for help).
There are bound to be hundreds of other places out there just as good or maybe even better.. I'm paying under $30.00 a month for the features I wanted (needed). Check'em out.

Just want to chime in - PowerVPS is the best host I've ever had.

PowerVPS was the best until friday night  But i agree with Chris-777 that if you need a VPS that PowerVPS is the way to go. For shared hosting aSmallorange.com is the best shared i've ever used.
Sounds like something dreamhost.com would do.

Heh, we had to move www.club3g.com OFF of ASO to PowerVPS because ASO didn't have the resources at the time to host us on a box that didn't crash and burn 5 times a day.

ever throught about hosting your self? I had over 12,000 members on one of my sites, and found it was cheapter just to setup one of my boxs in my studio and host my own site, vs going remote dedicated.

I had the same problem. I switched to JaguarPC.com's VPS. No problems whatsoever (Other than 1 downtime which was a datacenter problem), and super fast. :D
