If someone subscribes to a thread, and I get a double post merge when I post in it, are they notified of a new post?
I ask because this has happened to me a couple times in support threads where I am trying to answer a question for someone.

They will get notified of the first new post, as usual.

I think he means; If he posts a reply, and someone gets notified of that reply and reads it but does not respond, and then after that he then posts his second post that gets auto-merged, do they then get another email notifying them or not?
If thats not what you meant, then thats a question I also would like to know the answer to :)

Yes, that is what I meant. It's happened to me three times now, so I am sure it must be relatively common. Thanks Chris.

Well since the timestamp is not updated, i doubt that a new notification will be sent out.
Auto-merge will happen mostly in 2 situations:
- You give multiple responses, mostly within minutes. Chance is small that someone will get notified and visits the thread within this short time.
- Someone bumps before 24 hours. Nothing new so it is ok that there is no notification sent.
It si a prize we all must pay for those that uined it by bumping all the time.

Does it have to be either or? Can auto-merge be tweak to send notification without updating the timestamp?

it can be, yes, but it's not the way i'd like it to be here

You realize it can be 'defeated' by quoting a post anyway...

well, of course, if someone quotes a post, then it is not the same author, that's for purpose

A quoted post still merges if you are the last poster in the thread.
You only recieve email text for the original post.
I use thread subscription here (and on most sites).
Below this line is Stefan's post above quoted.

Just to let you see what happens :)

Well, I think it's an issue, for what my 2 cents is worth :)
