Now Playing Hack

Okay, here's the deal. I want to write a 'now playing' hack for vBulletin that would add your current song playing in WinAmp, Windows Media Player, iTunes, etc...

It would allow you to add the song to a number of different places - a tooltip in who's online, a seperate forumhome box below who's online, in the users public profile, your choice.

It might have some other features too such as an amazon buy link.

The thing is, to do this I'll have to write plugins for all those media players on top of the hack for vBulletin. And I'm not going through all that work for a couple dozen installs.

So, if the poll hits 200 I'll write the hack.

It would be fully configurable. You could have it display in any or all of the places I described. And if I did the buy link it would definately be optional and configurable.

I help my son admin and an seo forum (seorefugee.com) and, for some reason we keep straying off into discussions of music (mostly 60s and 70s rock). I'd love to be able to add this to our "off topic" area. Plus it would be great to have a hack that could display"random user is listening tosome song" at the top of the page.

Because it's a very hard hack to write and if I'm going to put all that work into it I want to make sure enough people want it to make it worth while.

I'm not sure how long it would take. I'd have to write custom plugins for each major player, then the vBulletin hack. It could take a month or two.

hambil I can send you the php version of one I had and maybe you could build off of that this way it went faster. I know that one worked great and it updated your signature or where ever you decided to put it as soon as you switched songs.

I would like to have an script to do things without having my members go and register in a 3rd party website. There are other scripts for last.fm we are voting for an automated one for vbulletin.

i've got a good idea - each song that is picked up by this mod, should be put into the member's profile, in a list format.
There can then be a feature to meet other people, depending on the music type, artist, and song track.

Although, you would have to allow the member to delete entries - as sometimes i got porn videos on my winamp ^__^ - i don't want that showing on my site!

I think the latest version of ITunes can send an xml with the song info to a specified url... and I think winamp has a plugin that will do the same, no?

yes winamp has a plugin for this i am not good at coding but most of coders can do this easily also there is an old vb plugin example for this you can use it as a reference

my friend has created this hack now, for his site forum.
you need to install a small file to your computer for winamp to work - but i think he was saying it works fine with itunes and windows media player.

i'll speak to him about what he's going to do - i think it cost him a fair bit, so he's not in any mood to hand it out at this point....

BUT - it is very nice visually, and works well with each member ;)
