they req. a url to sign up here and if thats their site its only fitting
Maybe a mandatory category selection be put in place that shows next to or above the url to prevent someone from clicking on an adult/nsfw site without knowing what it is.

It's not like y'all haven't seen a pair of boobs before is it? Point taken, but moderating users homepages for adult material would be a task beyong the moderators here.

<sarcasm>You mean they have some means of moderating every post here, without them being reported by someone? WOW!</sarcasm>
Or.. are you saying that it is perfectly fine to have NSFW links on every post they make (in the dropdown of their username), and reporting them will result in no action being taken?
I mean.. blaming the non-omniscience of the staff here isn't really a good reason to justify people with adult sites in their profiles. Surely, a 'Report Profile' function would be of use?

Some people run adult sites, and the homepage field here is mandatory, go figure .... ;)

afaik it's not forbidden to run adult sites, and i cannot remeber that it's forbidden to run a vbulletin on these sites, so, cannot do much here

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but in this situation, I understand this to be a matter of looking at ones profile and going to said profile owner's homepage, just to find out (without any warning) that the homepage is adult in nature. Which in this case, it might be offensive to some people to [having no knowldege of the nature of the link they are about to click] view possible offensive material. I could be mistaken, but this is how I understand the situation.

It's no different to a user clicking on a link anywhere. If it's a parent who doesn't want their kid viewing offensive stuff, then install software to prevent it. If you're doing it at work, then chances are you probably shouldn't be anyway.

We have a few coders here who are younger than 18, I've noticed a few members who are 13-14-15 years of age - they probably shouldn't be on here in the first place, right? lol

It's a legal vs ethical issue. When I first purchased vB in Feb. I assumed that it had a policy against running adult content, as UBB does. To my surprise I didn't find anything after reading it.
I may have overlooked details in vB's policy but if I didn't I would think there would be some sort of site policy in place. People who use company's time/money to go on the web, well, that's their problem. Cause for a later debate for the legal realm.
Keeping in mind what christianb mentioned I think he does have a valid point regarding under-aged members. The Admins and Moderators are not to be parents (and we don't expect them to be) but they do govern any content that is presented here. Parents of under-aged members have a responsibility to curb what is viewable to their children but as a community there is a bit of responsibility too. I see no difference between reporting a post vs reporting indecent content. When it becomes known doesn't action take place?
Again, it's a matter of legal vs ethical.

i already know whos profile its in,
But either way, most URLs contain a word that would probably/should probably throw up a red flag as being adult. If you are affraid of getting in trouble, or arent allowed to view such material with other people around, i beleive that you shouldnt be freely clicking links without knowing where they go to begin with, as i'm sure anyone can find something offensive with each site...
Remember adult webmasters also purchased vBulletin software(or the webmaster wouldnt be here) and should also have the right to atleast put it in their homepage on their profile

Also, it's the parent's responsibility to know what their kids are surfing to / set up the appropriate safe surfing software on their PC.

I guess the best policy is to assume that every homepage link is going to lead to something not suitable for viewing at work.
BUT - Stefan, couldn't we easily add a radio button to the profile that says 'My homepage is an adult site' and then in the template, tag the url as such? This would give users fair warning and wouldn't take too much effort.

That is one way to look at it.. treating each link as NSFW would be safer I guess but...
Why is there a rule against posting Adult links in threads, but not against having them in the Profile? It seems non-balanced to me. :)

A link in a post is much more obvious, and a lot less effort to click, than a url tucked away in a users profile.

Users need their sites in their profiles because regardless of the topic of their forum, if someone has a question, they are asking about the code, not the content, of their site.

If it's an adult website we should have a toggle to hide the person's homepage from public view. This is after all a general audience website.

If your going to make Adult/NSFW homepages hidden, can I maybe suggest doing the same for all users homepages?
Even better! Have a checkbox next to the homepage field asking if there site contains any Adult/NSFW content to please click the check box. Then have another option in the users options to hide Adult/NSFW released sites when view there profile.

Or at the very least, a rule in place that requires adult site webmasters to note it in their sig/profile somehow. When someone asks for help on something I know the answer to, I tend to just click their site and look at the error.
I've added a new required field to the edit profile page now. By default it's set to 'no'. When it's set to 'yes' it will display a warning in that user's profile next to the homepage link.
If you find someone that links to such content without the warning, report it to a staff member and we will take care of it.

Uh excuse me, but while everyone is busy singling out adult sites as evil here, may I please remind everyone that "adult" is not necessarily equivalent to porn?
I happen to be the owner and administrator of an adult site, and obviously, a vB license owner. So yes, they do sell licenses to owners of adult sites. My site is not a porn site. It is an adult community much like thousands of others around the www. We discuss politics, religion, recipes, kids, spousal abuse, child abuse, dating, marriage, sex *gasp*, and much more.
Are there any nude pictures on my site. Yes there are. All neatly tucked away in a photo gallery where they can be seen by permission only. But because the f*** word is seen on my site... just as it can be heard on any given cable TV movie at any time of the day or night... I'm restricted from linking to my site in my signature. Ok, I can accept that.
What I do not accept, however, is my adult site being thrown into the same ring with porn sites, which btw, I do not like nor approve of.
PLEASE, get it straight. There IS a difference between an adult site and a porn site.
thank you

Indeed, hence the reason I titled the thread 'Adult/NSFW'.
The main point being: A user should always feel safe when clicking a link on this site.. safe in the knowledge that the resulting page that is opened will be Safe to open at Work.

Thanks for bringing a sanity check to the puritan rampage. God Forbid someone sees a breast! Now, if we are talking about kids shooting the heads of cops or some other insane violence, that's okay! But boobs need to be monitored. Insanity when nudity is considered worse than violence.:(

I'm not sure why or how it would remain. Mine was removed for me before I had a chance to remove it myself. I received an email the day after I signed up here telling me that my signature link to my site was "unacceptable" and to please remove it, or it would be removed for me. Apparently they couldn't wait, because I came right over here and it was already gone.
