Once you have a license you have the option to download 3.0.9 but it's better to run the lastest version of vB 3.0.x

If you want to use vBulletin, be it version 1.0.0 - 3.5.4 you need a license. Period.

one licence means one vbulletin installation UNLESS you have purchased addiotional licences no need to ask this the answer is no anyway you can use whatever version you wanna use but note two points here

it is better to run the latest release (because it has a better security "stability")
only the latest release is officially supported

there is no such thing like a free vbulletin board that dream is to good to be true

they are given the choice to either purchase a licence or stop using vbulletin and destroy all data used by vbulltin (used illegally)

If they fail to make the choice, they face prosecution under federal law including federal (Office Space quote here) prison.

It has a thick admin panel. That is all I can think of...Geez, hardly anything to pick at.

Thats not really helping though, how else do you prepare all of the options and data for users to work with?

vBulletin can do all the things which SMF has, and even more. Trust me, it is well worth the money, ask anyone and they'll agree.

I have extensive experience with SMF. My site, www.spacebuffs.com used to have a SMF forum, and my other site, www.ageofantiquity.com still does (not for long, though, as it is about to get its own vB upgrade and facelift).

While I think SMF is the nicest of the free forum solutions, it still can't touch vB, in my opinion. Creating skins, adding mods and the like are much more of a pain with SMF and, worst of all, updates are slower in coming, leaving it open to security exploits for longer periods.

That said, it beats vB if you're a Joomla CMS user, as there are a couple of mods which allow easy full integration with Joomla.

With all the above said, the nicest thing about using vB is that many web denizens are often very familiar with it before they even visit your site, widespread as its use is. This makes them much more likely to register to your forums. SpaceBuffs has gotten more action in a week using vB than it did running SMF for almost a year.
