The Icons must be places in /arcade/cat_imgs/ if you want to use them.
Where are these icons.

You have to create them yourself.
The name of the file should correspond wit the category id - for example if you made a category for Yeti Games and it had the category id 7 then the image would need to be named 7.gif

I created some gifs to fit the categories I created, moved the games to their respective categories, uploaded the gifs, and then...nothing is different.
All the games still get listed alphabetically 12 to a page.
Can someone please explain how this works.

Did you active the Categories and see them in the Arcade's main page ?
At least the Text/Name of the Categories should appear ...

Yes they are active, and no they are not visible anywhere. The category gifs are the names of the categories. I have tried all sorts of settings and nothing changes. All the games just show as 12 per page as when they were all in the default category.

Do the categories show in the arcade but without the images (text links?)
Don't name the gifs after the category name, they must be named after the Category ID - look at the example I gave for Yeti - where the category id is 7 so the image is named 7.gif
Easy way to find out the category id is hovver you're mouse pointer over the category in the main arcade the link should look like this in your address bar -
http://www.yoursite.com/forum/arcade.php?&act=Arcade&cat=7
Where 7 is the category id
Ofcourse that will only work if you can see the links - if you're having problems PM me wit your site url and temporary access and I'll have a look :)

Check you last Screenshot, there is a column "Icon" in AdminCP's Category-List which tells you the Filename of the Image for each Category.
Category "Arcade" has 2.gif as its Filename ect.
What I meant beforte is:
Arcade Main Settings -> Use categories for games -> YES

I have fixed it. I found a radio button I had not clicked -- oops -- operator error.
