Whats the Top 10 worst hacks 4 server load?

Hi peeps

I have lots of hacks installed as i am sure a few of you already know ;)

I think because of this my server load goes from about 0.30 with 2 members
online upto about 2.0 with 8 members online and so on and so on.....

This in turn dramatically slows the forum down, so what i want to do is
remove (if its feasable) the worst hacks for server load....

Therefore i would like you all to list the worst hacks that you know
that cause a lot of server load and hopefully this in turn will help me to
trim the amount of 'ahem, hacks that i have installed an improved the
performance of our forum......

Or, is someone going to tell me thats its nowt to do with the hacks and its
all down to the crappy host i have :o

vBShout, with some bad settings for vB3
really, anything that makes an overabudent use of ajaxx.

What hacks do yuou have installed and we will work from there

Remove any hacks that can simply be done with template edits and template conditionals. There seems to be a rash of them lately. They create server load where none needs to be created. Waste of resources.

And if you do have a crappy host, get a new one. ;)

I do have VB shout 2.0 but it is only used for the staff (about 6 peeps)
I have somewhere between 100 and 200 hacks install, prob more edging towards 200 :o What can i say, i am a sucker for a new toy....

I dont think my host is that bad, at present i am on a semi dedicated (forum aint big enough for dedicated yet)

The best way to see what hacks i do have installed would prob be to look at my profile in the mocp Zachery (thats if it shows in there) or i suppose i could copy and past in between code tags but theres a lot and may be too much info to actually post..... Spose the easiest way would be for you to have admin access and then you could actually see all the plugins ya self :)

well 200 hacks are not good.

.. You should install micro stats, or enable debug mode for yourself and see what your query usage it is at.

Hacks are ment to be addons for exactly what you need, not just new toys you think might be fun.

This is what overhacking causes. untraceable problems.

Like i say, i have VB shout but is only used for staff purposes...

Most if not all of the hacks i have installed are for a purpose
The hacks i installed for the sheer heel of it (to see what it was about )
have been removed.....

The reason for all the modifications was purely to have a different forum to
the majority of forums that are based on the same idea as mine.

The down side is when you look into a hack (and dont know out about coding)
you are not aware that this may (one day) cause issuses with server resources/load, this is why i am trying to find at least the top 10 worst
hacks for using server resources/load.....

I will be supprised if vb shout does cause much greif for me as like i said its
only for about 7 - people and poss max 4 or 5 at anyone time!

So, other than VB Shout 2.0 and the pager (i have the LPP 1 installed)
what else do you know about that could cause our server grief please?

Can you make a list of what you have installed? There is no top 10 worse, one of your hacks may not be widely used or known but could be causing issues.

200 hacks is overkill, are you positive that you need ever single one?

I've got the arcade, and part of vBadvanced for my news script. Thats realy about it, besides a staff feature. My site is fairly active, adding more hacks wouldn't help it be more active, only more members do.

I've got the arcade, and part of vBadvanced for my news script. Thats realy about it, besides a staff feature. My site is fairly active, adding more hacks wouldn't help it be more active, only more members do.


I also have an arcade, cmps, gars and journals(which I don't like ;) ) and just some small things, like the welcome header, birthday thread, the webtemplate thing from logician and I think that is about it...maybe some other things, but I am not sure if they are hacks, plug-ins or what? To a noob they are all the same LOL

The thing is all the hacks i have installed are being used in 1 way or an other,
I have removed about 10 - 20 hacks over the last few days, ones that werent
really used or were installed to test it out....

I was always led to beleive that the PsiStats were server intensive, so i disabled
this only to find no difference lol

When debug mode is on what does the (3) mean next to the template, (3) is

Many times hacks can be fine tuned.
- uncached templates
- limit what page hacks show on vs. many pages.
- use links to open new pages w/ extra info vs. all the stuff on 1 page.

I have 30-40 products @ the moment and MAX at 21 queries on a few pages AVJ. 12 on most.

I've just checked my forum and i'm running 11 queries on forum home, 18 on forum display, and 13 on show thread.

I run about 30 hacks (including BOTH arcades) and forumhome queries run at 22 which seems to be fine.

I have an entirely unnecessary but nice hack on the front page that adds 3 queries so if I ever had any issues I could easily drop to 19.

As a rough guide - when you reach 20 it's worth looking at why, as that's an upper amount. Past 25 and you should start to question if there is a problem, 30+ will almost certainly be the sign of a problem hack or hacks and start to affect performance.

Everyone is telling you the same thing.

There is no way in hell that 100 hacks are being used by 584 members. Let alone 200. You need to stop "being a sucker for new toys" and run your site as if you want people to come back. Your forum index looks like you've taken every possible thing you could ever use and just gone "that'll do" and thrown it in.

I don't even know what your site is about.

A few pointers:-
- REMOVE SOME DAMN HACKS. You don't need 200. I have twice as many members, and they don't need 200 hacks.

- REMOVE some forums. You have SIXTY ONE forums - and that isn't counting subforums. Of course your server load is going to be high. I'm no vBulletin expert, but I'm assuming that would create at least a few extra queries. For example, do you really need a forum for each different type of Pay TV hack? If you only have like 10 posts in five related forums, stick them together and have 50 in one. It looks busier, which will draw more people in.

- Your page is taking 9.8 seconds to be GENERATED. Not downloaded. Not displayed, but generated. That's 9.8 seconds that I have to wait before your page even starts to display in my browser. If I wasn't purposefully trying to check your site out so I could help you out, I would have left by then.

In short dude, your attitude pretty much bites in this topic. You say "which are the most server intensive hacks?", everyone says "you have a gazillion hacks, no wonder...", you say "yes, but which ones are the most server intensive?"

The answer is simple. It isn't the quality of the hacks, or the amount of resources that each one uses, its the fact that you have 200 hacks that you don't need. Your site could easily run without ANY hacks other than the portal mod. Do yourself a favour and listen to these good people.

And I pray that you aren't using a shared host. Think of the other customers who are trying to run their site and are getting massive delays thanks to your love of "toys"...you wouldn't like it. Be responsible.

I visited your site, and I wouldn't be suprised if people are leaving as soon as they go there, you have way to many. I saw your thread for a new moderator and the postbit is MASSIVE for you. Like triple the size of any postbit i've seen.

I have to agree with what was said earlier, you're instaling everything.

I for one would be happy to help you go through your hacks, tell you what I wouldn't recommend keeping, and see if you agree.

I would encourage you to think about this, 9 seconds for generation is way to much. I'll help you uninstall or whatever if you want the help, but I wouldn't recommend leaving it as is.

Just out of interest in the debug mod you have for example

a list of templates and (1) or (62) after the template, what are the (1) & (62)
are they queries for said template?

I have now removed quite a few hacks, i have been through them all (or there abouts) and removed any that dropped a query or more, I am down to 274 hacks and 39 queries on the forumhome....

I will attempt to do the same for the postbit and other main templates as well
perhaps at the weekend :)

Its the hack Custom Links (if ya want to search for it)
Basically it adds a custom menu (can name it what you like) to the navbar (mine is the Extras Menu)
It then allows you to add custom links A: either to the cutom menu as a drop link or B: as a stand alone link on the navbar...

Its a pretty good hack and i have used it from there start or there abouts

So what i am looking for now is to get rid of the custom links and mack a
manual drop link menu, but i need to know if even creating a manual droplink
menu will cause lots of queries (there will be about 17 items in it), the menu
will be the same as the Quick Links menu As this is really all the Custom Links
are, its just another quick links menu that allows you to add the links in the admin cp

Ripping your DVD's that you own for your own personal backup is a largely differnt thing than downloading riped dvd's for your own personal backup.

Its like downloading a rom from a rom site, you legally need to rip them yourself to be covered.

Hmm so robbing NZBs from newzbin.com to distribute on your site when they expressly forbid it is ok as well is it.

Talking about ripping a dvd for home use when you own the original is as far as i am aware not against the law does not infringe anyones copyright and to be honest is more about knowledge and gaining it than anything else.

You however activly sell your site using the fact that you let people use nzbs (yes i have been using usenet for years and do not need them so i do know what a NZB is) you also have a ftp server holding files that shall we say are not exactly legit not to mention the bittorrent hash files that have resulted in other high profile sites being shut down.

No it is not I that should be worried and if your too stupid or too lazy to at least take all traces of newzbin out of the nzb when you give it out then thats your hard luck.....

I've just skimmed the entire thread and there's one thing I didn't see anyone mention though I may simply have missed it:

As well as cpu load, hundreds of plugins will also increase memory load a LOT.
1. The datastore caches all the plugins and the datastore is loaded per pageload.
2. The templates cached will take more memory.


Bashy I don't know if you're still reading this thread but if you are may I give you some fresh advice based on how it looks right now...

The portal is cute. I do like the icons. But:
- Live help? Help for what?
- There's a clock. I have a clock in the bottom right on the taskbar so I'm not sure why that's there. Just unnecessary bandwidth and clutter IMHO
- You might want to get rid of the TAZ review off the front page, it's months old and not really relevant.
- The description of the site is good. Not sure about the need for italics though tbh.
- For some reason it's telling me what my browser is. Is that in case I've forgotten?


Going into the forum itself:
Lets start with the time and size:

MKPortal says: Page generated in 0.03834 seconds with 6 queries
So that's 0.64 secs on 37 queries.

Including images the index is 168kb big. That's 40 secs on 56k. I hope you have gzip on.

I don't know how many are online. If it's a low number and takes 0.64, lets hope you never get a high number!

Also, it took 18 seconds to actually download and render the index page on the browser, not including graphics.
I don't know if that's down to page complexity or a slow upload pipe. I can download the data for the page in about half a second.
18 seconds on any website is a lifetime. And that's on a 2800+ processor and firefox. Anyone still on a 1.*ghz processor could be waiting up to a minute.
Even Opera (which is uber fast at rendering) takes 14 secs.



Again you have live help and a clock on the left. Screen clutter.

Upon loading the page the very first thing I see is blue bolded comic sans scrolling text.
Yes. I don't see the navbar, the lastest threads info box or anything else. I see scrolling text, and on a scale of 1-10 annoying, it's an 8. And I'm not even sure what's scrolling across. It looks like a list of all the threads...

There's also a second scroller which is telling me something about referring people. Two things:
1. Scrollers are hard to read because they move several pixels in every frame. Buggered if I know why the browsers didn't smooth that out.
2. Why would I refer someone to the site before I'd even seen it myself. If it has to be there, make it a members only fad.


I don't know why people put latest threads and stats at the top. If you really must have it at the top, have it there for members only. Guests don't generally care what the latest threads are before they've seen the forum list.

It's nearly an entire pagedrop to the actual forums and it's 3-4 more to view them all. That's a lot. I appreciate that you have the moderators on and you have vertical subforums and they're making the cell heights taller, but 4 is still a long way down.

The red "warning text" looks horrible on the blue, it's hard to read.


The style's quite pleasant and things are laid out okay. Though I'm really not sure why the page has been mounted inside the MKPortal wrapper, the left bar only goes a third of the way down and is a bit pointless really. I know the intro says there are more side blocks on registration - I hope they're useful.

To give you an accurate idea, even the error page takes 5 secs to render, and there's hardly anything to it! I think it's the MKPortal wrapper TBH.


I haven't gone into the content of the forums or threads any of that, I'm just commenting on the way it looks. If I was visiting your forum, the scrolly text, the enormous scroll on the index page and the relatively slow pageload and very slow render times would make me say "ouch, my eyes hurt and my browser is crying. I'm not visiting here again".

People don't realize what gzip or mod_deflate do because the browser recodes it back to its original code. But trust me, they send the data without all the spaces and such.

I do not use any page compression hack.. I just use Orban's plugin based template cache.. Also I've installed mod_gzip on my server.. The addons is just awesome.. Saving 77% minimum :D:D:D..

But when do I disbale mod_gzip via admincp use only server's mod_gzip then the page properties increase to 100+ KB.. Now is it fair to keep enable mod_gzip in vB ACP? This is my microstats..

Just wondering with Moderation Auto PM hack most of time my server load was 3 or 5+.. Sometimes It was 10+.. I see one day 15 :confused:.. I did open a support ticket in vBSEO as I thought its for vbseo.. But no.. After disabling vBSEO the load was same.. Then I try to disable every single hack & check the stat.. I found that hack as a resource hunger..

Does that say 15 seconds? Server load 7.85?! I only get server loads that high on MediaWiki pages (and I have no idea why, hopefully they reduced queries in the PHP 5 versions).

With respect to the realtime pagecompressor, some hosts do not have gzip enabled on their servers, and do not offer php.ini access to turn this on. Is the pagecompressor mod a decent alternative for these users, or does its effect on server load make it recommended to not use anything in these cases?

Also, I have been writing a hack that definitely needs its own table in the database. The hack adds 1 query to pages it's used on. It was suggested to me to instead save the database table as an array in a datastore field. I fear that some users may end up with hundreds of rows in their tables, and "querying" arrays does not have the same simplicity as MySQL. How much additional memory usage would you say is comparable to 1 MySQL query?

vbShout + add to all pages mod = CRASH! I have a lot of issues with vbShout. If you dont use the addons for it i think you will be ok. Also vbSEO used to crash my server constantly b/c there are LOTS of inifinite loops in the way it modifies the htaccess with certain setups.

Ok I found the option for Gzip and its set to 1. But I still do not see debug or any of refresh rate adjustment. I have VBshout flatline installed at my forum and it runs without a hitch no errors to report and users love it I normally have about 20 people talking in there at peak times. System load is still a bit higher than I would like in the 2 range but the site loads incredibly fast so I can't complain that much.
I also recently had the Vbshout2.0 installed and that was causing all types of problems on my board.

Theres an option in vBulletin to turn gzip on, and set its page compression level. Turn it on and set it to 1.

I read some where that if the server has this turned off by default, you should turn the compression to 3.

I know the default compression level of the command line gzip is 6, how does that differ from compressing pages on the fly?

When you're gziping something at the command line you're probaling doing so for a one time reason and compressing it for a move, 6 is a good number for this. However the compression difference between 1-6 could vary depending on the file type you want to compress.

Compression level 1 gets the job done on html / css very well, any higher is a waste.

well 200 hacks are not good.

.. You should install micro stats, or enable debug mode for yourself and see what your query usage it is at.

Hacks are ment to be addons for exactly what you need, not just new toys you think might be fun.

This is what overhacking causes. untraceable problems.


is not it far easier then to simply rename the forum folder, and upload a full fresh copy of the most stable current version of vb to the forum folder and only install the necessary hacks?
