CAn't you restrict downloading attachment (if there is one) before clicking install? And after he installs he can download the attachment.Would me much cooler and there would be more installs for our hacks ;)

i think the better is to add something into the install code in the product when some one import the product it opens a new window with installtion link
and same when some one uninstall the product

 you'd think it was some sort of popularity contest here.
I'm agasint this, I don't want to have to click install to download a hack, Then I'll click uninstlal untill I want to.

you can of course put an install link into your hacks, if you think that will make the install button on your hacks more popular, and not annoying to the suers of your mods to think twice next time before installing one of your hacks again.
but apart from that, the answer is no, we vbulletin.org won'T force people to click the isntall button!

Ethically, I think if an author uses that method he/she should be up front about it so that the user who's installing the mod knows what to expect.

I feel sometimes this request comes out of the hope of getting enough installs to get a better title or something. It's not a competition. -_-

The "Install" link is somewhat confusing if you're not familiar with the set up. It doesn't do anything with regards to the installation process. The "install" link is basically a way to let the author know that you've installed his/her hack. Plus, when they manually send out updates, the users who've clicked "Install" will receive it via e-mail.
To properly install a product, you'll need to go into your Admin CP --> Plugin Manager --> Manage Products then at the bottom click "Add/Import Product". Upload any necessary files via FTP and do template edits if instructed.
If you need further support I suggest that you post in the respective hack thread. :)

You'll need to first purchase vBulletin (http://www.vbulletin.com/order/). After you do come back here, verify your license and then you'll have access to the goodies. :)

Yeah That! (p.s. we really need a yeah that smilie ;) )
I will often download a hack and test it out locally. If I like the working version (not just the concept) then I will install it on my live board and then click install. In the early days I use to click install whenever I downloaded a hack. Now I have hundreds of hacks listed as installed, but I only use about 20 of them.
For me a hack rating system would be more interesting than the number of installs. I am sure some people would look at a hack, think it is very well done and give it a good rating, but may not necessarily want to install it.

A rating system that is separate from vB's default rating system?

Yes.
At the moment you can see the star rating of a specific thread. But this is where the Hack DB would come in. The rating system would only apply to hack specific threads, and users could search for the top rated hacks and then make an informed choice as to the quality and popularity of the hack.
Also, just having 5 stars is a little limiting. Something with a larger rating spread would also make it a little more meaning full. IMHO.
