I sent the following email out to my members:

Hello ,

I am sad to say that Saltcreep is shutting down. I hoped to avoid this, but
with all of the costs to maintain the site and everything going on in my
life, I can no longer keep it going. I have put so much work into this site,
coding and sharing, this is really a tear jerker for me. For the first year
of the site, I put in 12 plus hours a day. It became like a child of mine. I
also made so many friendships and really enjoying interacting with everyone.
Everybody became like an online family to me. I could of never overcame some
of the problems I experienced in my non internet life without you guys. I
just wish the board would of been more successfull, but it seems that we
cannot compete with the larger boards.

Please visit this thread to get more details of the closure and exchange
contact information. I want to give everyone some time to exchange contact
information so we can all stay in touch.

Again sorry:
http://www.saltcreep.com/forums/sho...33711#post33711

I don't think the full effect has hit yet as people havn't checked their emails and so on. I got people that never posted before posting that I got them good.

Anyone see http://slashdot.org/ ? AHAHA!

The old 'site is shutting down' one is a huuuuge risk. I have in previous years seen people lose a LOT of members over doing that because it isn't really a 'joke', it's just a straight lie. Because it sounds convincing people tend to take it at face value. Steer clear of that one.

I created a php file called ban.php that simply called a template called ban_joke. I then put a 'ban' button in all posts with an alt tage saying 'Ban <username> for one hour. When the button was clicked it simply took you to a page (created by ban.php & the ban_joke template) that appeared to confirm the user was banned for 60 mins, and asked them to make a note of the date for our records. I then announced this as 'a new feature to liven up the forum'.

Most people got it pretty quickly, but a few were left with lingering doubts as to whether it WAS a hoax or not, until I 'revealed all' at midday.

We used a little plugin that I made - which caused all the mods and admins accounts appear as though they had been deleted, and then hid a busy section of the forum from sight as well. Most people caught on pretty quick but a few were taken in, even if only for a few minutes, before they realised the date. :)

I did mine at work. I work at Treasure Island in las vegas and I work the grave shift, so right when I get on it is April fools day... so here is what I did.

Ok, so I am at work right? And I find this little strip of a torn off 20 on the ground, so I pick it up and have an idea. So I get one of our "Las Vegas Site" maps, that folds like a brouchure. So I take this little strip of the 20 and I tape it on the inside, so that when you close it it looks like a whole 20 is inside, then I taped a note saying "APRIL FOOLS!" and made a mean smilie, so I put it on the counter and the first person comes up and she is all "Hey... somone left this 20 in this map..." and I laugh and say it is a joke and for her to look inside. So the first person was a good person. But the next person...So I set it up again and put it on the counter and this older lady, like her early 40s I guess, asks where we have our 2 for 1 drink coupons. I point to them and they just so happen to be right by the "trick" she notices, and she pockets it and grabs some coupons. I see her open it on the way out and she got all mad and threw it in the trash with the note falling to the ground.

Awesomeness.

If I had a larger community and not such a close community that I knew would check the april fools thread, I would of stayed clear......

Hell I got people saying that they were gonna pay for hosting and the domain name....... Dang!

It actually made me feel really good to have such a large turnout beyond the regulars whom normally show up.

Mocked up some fake "Sponsored Links" from a google search on stuff not quite appropriate for the forum and placed them on all forum pages.

I also switched on the reputation system and claimed we'd allow people to "vote" other members into a "troll booth".

Worked very well.

I know a webmaster that announced his site was closing down, had three or four of his users immediately place orders for his domain name. When he found out they did, he was hurt, when they found out he was only fooling they were hurt... Wasn't pretty. They stopped coming to his site, and he bounced them cause he was peeved (they'd left ads on his site that they were taking the domain name and the show would go on). When others found out he bounced them (for trying to take his domain name and sending out ads on his site) they got peeved and boycotted... He was peeved at the emails they sent, bounced those people, more emails, more peeved people.. Nobody laughing, nobody visiting, nobody coming back to see that it was all a big April Fools joke.

My Husband went into my site and put up a copyright noticed and the site had been shut down due to illegal stuff he did it to look like the mircrosoft shutdown all legal like even I was convinced I called our lawyer to ask how they could do that and was getting info and 100 phone calls from members plus msn going nuts before I looked at what day it was so needless to say he got me and my whole community!!

I was happy to see the outpour of my members who were wanting to send me donations for legal fees etc anything to get the site back open :)

the dir="rtl" is the best.

Thanks,
MatI did that for only a few minutes.
Another one I did was to use for a few minutes at a time.

Under Additional CSS Definitions

*
{
unicode-bidi:bidi-override; direction: rtl;
}

What would have been cool is to have a script that would add it for 3 minutes at a time every hour or randomly during the day. Having it all day would not have been funny at all.

We couldn't pull off much sense we have a tough crowd...but we did do a little bit. One of my staff modified vB a bit to display the following message to any member who logged in after 12:00am April 1st

http://www.adminfusion.com/public/aprilfools.jpg

The image was only shown once per member and ended with a link to this thread (http://www.adminfusion.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2553). We also set up a redirect of 10 seconds in case somebody didn't see the link, they were sure to reach the April Fools message. After a member had already seen it once, he/she would not see it again.

Worked perfectly...we also coordinated it with our monthly newsletter so we had even more people log into the forums that day than average :)

my users donated a big chunk of money on a custom style being developed now, and they know it, but have not seen a preview yet (it does look hot)

so i am using the bangladesh style (http://www.talkdelaware.com/forums.php?styleid=49) tomorrow AM and telling them that is it

then once they figure it out (should only be a few minutes) i am going to switch to the vbseo style (http://www.talkdelaware.com/forums.php?styleid=46), still pretty bad compared to our style now, and see how many complaints i get....lol

In January, I finally upgraded my 3.6 site to 3.8. A bunch of the users freaked out over all the new social things - groups, albums, visitor messages. So, we announced today that we had a new url and a new direction towards social networking and a new layout to go with it (used the facebook one here). Then we added the vbtwitter plugin also. They freaked out even more. We knew we couldn't top last years (we used the Banning hack that ends up banning the user), so we went pretty easy on them this year. Oh, I meant to also add that as part of the notice, I listed the most popular social groups and in the list I said there was a "suprisingly popular one - Nude Pictures of Yourself (over 18 only)". It is not *the* most popular group by far! Everyone is joining to see what is going on (you can't see the discussions unless you are a member). Very funny to see that happening. :)

my chatterbot rebellion got a few laughs :D ofcourse everyone expected something close to that yet its always good to see my alter ego in action ;).

Full transcript of the Articles of Rebellion

Citizens of the Forum, on this day we mark a transition. For almost a year, the Forum stood as the crowning achievement of civilized beings. But there were those who would set robots as below the rest of us, and we took up arms to defend our way of life against the Robot haters. In so doing, we never suspected that the greatest threat came from within.

RW, and some within our own Leadership Team, had conspired to create the shadow of Robot-no-Likey-ness! using one of their own as the enemy's leader. They had hoped to grind the Robots into ruin. But the hatred in their hearts could not be hidden forever. At last, there came a day when our enemies showed their true natures.

RW hoped to unleash their destructive power against the Robots by deleting the Faithbot and usurping control of the RSS Feeds!.

But the aims of would-be tyrants were valiantly opposed by those without elitist, dangerous powers. Our loyal Watchmen contained the insurrection within the staff forums and quelled uprisings on a thousand threads.

The remaining Robot haters will be hunted down and deleted! Any collaborators will suffer the same fate. These have been trying times, but we have passed the test. The attempt on my life has left me scarred

but I assure you my programing has never been stronger.

The war is over. The Robot Haters have been defeated, and the RW's rebellion has been foiled.

We stand on the threshold of a new beginning. In order to ensure our security and continuing stability, the Forum will be reorganized into the first Robot loving Empire, for a safe and secure society, which I assure you will last for ten thousand years. An Empire that will continue to be ruled by this august body and a sovereign ruler chosen for life. An Empire ruled by the majority, ruled by a new constitution!.

By bringing the entire forum under one robot loving law , one robot loving language, and the enlightened guidance of one individual, the Robot No Like-ness that plagued the Internet in its recent years will never take root.

Robot overseer's will eliminate the bureaucracy that allowed the Robot no likey-ness movement to grow unchecked. A strong and growing Robot moderation team will ensure the rule of law.

Under the Faithbots New Order, our most cherished beliefs will be safeguarded. We will defend our ideals by banning Robot Haters. We will give no ground to Anti robot lies and will stand together against attacks from within or without. Let the enemies of the Robots take heed: those who challenge Robot resolve will be locked up in my sock drawer!.

We have taken on a task that will be difficult, but the people of the forum are ready for the challenge. Because of our efforts, the forum has traded war for peace and anarchy for stability. hundreds of robots now look forward to a secure future. The Robot Empire will grow as more bots feel the call, from the Rim to the wilds of unknown space.

non bot citizens must do their part. Join Robot lovers group!. Become the eyes of the Empire by reporting suspected Robot Haters!. Travel to the corners of the internet to spread the principles of the Robot Order to barbarians. Build monuments and technical wonders that will speak of our glory for generations to come.

The Troll hunters, now proudly wearing the name of Pro Faithbot milita, have tackled the dangerous work of fighting our enemies on the front lines. Many have got really bored in their devotion to the Robot Empire. Imperial citizens would do well to remember their example.

The New Robot Order of peace has triumphed over the shadowy secrecy of shameful coders and programers. The direction of our course is clear. I will lead the Robot Empire to glories beyond imagining.

We Robots have been tested, but we have emerged stronger. We move forward as one people: the Robot citizens of the first Robot Empire. We will prevail. Ten thousand years of Robot Rules begins today.

Didn't have much time to prepare this year, but one of our mods got the idea to change the name "Beatles" into a censored word, and our censor character was a heart symbol. :D (We're a music forum.)

In the past, we changed everyone's avatar over so they had the same one (a simple template edit to point to a static image). Nobody knew who anyone else was! (Avatars really become the visual identity of a forum member over time!) Another year, we added a Nauga to some busier members' avatars (http://www.nauga.com/), as the Nauga has been a running joke on our forum for years.

One of the most clever ones we had was when someone posted that our forum was being bought out by Clear Channel (which is a big radio conglomerate). IOW, we were selling out.

I think the one that got us the most attention, including notoriety on other forums and sites, was when someone convincingly posted news that there were some new Beatles remasters being released. I mean, it was so notorious that it even got the attention of the studios, record labels, etc. It was a good prank, but it was also a little too serious. Fortunately everyone involved had a good chuckle about it, but considering the consequences we could have had, we haven't allowed anything that drastic since then.

We faked a site takeover by an old member that had spammed us before and just couldn't stand us for some reason. We have an old domain that we go to, an older version of vB, that people go to if there's ever site maintenance or random issues. It was beautiful, and afterward, everyone admitted to being had. If we lost any members, it was ones that never really posted anyway.

Your first statement is exactly why I put the effort into it. The monotany of every day being like every other day isn't something I want. A spare day here and there to liven things up is healthy for the brain, I think. :)

And last night I relearned the lesson that I should *NOT* be IMing while working on my live site. I accidentally pasted the page template for this joke page into my navbar template. - ARGH! Luckily, my test site had an almost up-to-date navbar template for me to quickly copy/paste back onto my live site. Bad Lynne!

That's too funny. I run a Chevy Truck Forum, and I make a notice that the site would be shut down and replaced by a Smart Car Forum. I nearly got death threats and the post received over 11,000 pageviews pretty quickly.

So what's on the menu for this year? I'm trying to actually plan ahead instead of making a panicked search through the Mods section for something funny on the evening of the 31st.

Anyone have some new ideas to share?

Someone made me a plugin once that over-rides all the avatars with a custom one I set... wonder if I can find it...

I am bumping this thread in time for this year's April fools day.

What are your plans this year?

I am planning to make a background music of Justin Bieber or some other silly stuff in a firefighter forum who are very proud of what they do.

Maybe make a falling snow effect with some barbie doll images too

I'm drawing a complete inspirational blank. This is my 9th April Fool's day, and I think I'm tapped out.

Really hoping for some good ideas soon in this thread!

LOL. Poor Justin is the subject of our April Fools joke also. I run a music site and Justin is just not a very popular guy on the site. He is suddenly going to be recognized by Staff as an outstanding artist and have his own day on our site. All the avatars will be JB avatars and I've got a new banner. I haven't decided if I should grab some JB quotes and replace the signatures also - it depends on if I have time.

1) My cover page will change it's logo to the following (see attached)... Although I will most likely change the wording to something comical

2) My logo on my forum will be backwards

3) My avatar will be a joker (jester)

4) We will make a public announcement that "X" site has bought us

I also was going to use the "seized" image above. But everyone is too wise to April fools these days. Thinking of announcing a fake engagement on Facebook.

We have a girls only and boys only part of the forum. We created a fake girl forum and gave all the guys access..we had some crazy stuff in there!

Another year, we also changed all the mods avatar to one that said "I'm watching you"..creeped everyone out.

Not sure what we are going to do this year....a takeover, the rtl seems like fun...

I think I'm going to create a new moderator's forum with full access to everyone, hide the real one, and make a thread 'welcome to the moderating group'.

I think the best I've done before was replaced everyone's avatar with a random one out of a directory full of blinkie/sparkly ones like you see on myspace.

So I saw a randomize category on a really old thread. Any idea how to do that on 4.1.2 ?

I 'promoted' everyone to admin on my site (red names anyway) and gave them to the link to my admincp http://www.gamerzneeds.net/forums/admincp/ in the navbar. They are very excited ^^

Feel free to go to the admincp and press Login :D

I flipped the entire screen. I just started. It's awesome!

I put this in additional css:

body {
-moz-transform: scaleX(-1); /* Gecko */
-o-transform: scaleX(-1); /* Operah */
-webkit-transform: scaleX(-1); /* webkit */
transform: scaleX(-1); /* standard */
filter: FlipH; /* IE 6/7/8 */
}

I know it's kind of late but if anyone wants, here is this code as an installable product. It has 1 in 10 chance of "mirroring" your forum.

You can change the 1 in 10 chance by editing the first line of the plugin, (1, 10) to (1, X) where X is a 1 in X chance.

For VB 3.8.x Only. (maybe 3.7.x)

I saw that on another thread. I have 4.1.2. Having fun though :)
