Too much space in header

I've been wrestling with an issue that popped up a few months back that I can't get rid of. I have about an inch too much of white space between my navbar and the top of my forums. Attaching a screenshot to illustrate. Wondering if anyone can pinpoint the problem without needing direct access to my backend? I've tried undoing hacks and template edits that touch the header and navbar areas, to no avail.

without looking at the source I'd say you have one too many <br /> or something that is padding the area
