View Full Version : Allow Guests to view thread titles only...
This mod is made base on the request from this thread
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=108975
This is a crude work so it requires a couple permission settings to get to what you are looking for.
Currently, vb 3.5.x has the forum permission that either allow or disallow member/guests from viewing certain forum. I found out that we could enhance this feature by allowing viewer to browse the contents of these forum. However, they cannot view the content of a thread title. Once they click on the title they are prompt to register.
This hack will work on
printthread
showthread
archive/index.
Upload
bitfield_groupcantreadcontent.xml to includes/xml
request.gif to archive
request.gif to images
Import product through admincp

Strange - It also stopped registered users from viewing threads as well.

Without this addition, your forum will show up as private and the forum will appear empty.

3.5.x has a "Can View Thread Content" permission. Setting that to NO will allow the user to access the forums, view thread titles, but not view thread content.
So, this plugin isn't needed....

I tried that and it gave me this picture. How do you setup the forum the show the title without the ability to view thread content?

You have some other setting affecting it I would guess.
You can see it work here on my site, using just the built in vBulletin settings:

Thanks Paul :D :D
pixelpunk,
I use this mod because it give a little message to guest instead of point them directly to login page. If you don't find its useful, then perhap other mod will suite your needs :)

Even though this feature exists, it would be nice to allow search engines to see the threads without guests being able to...

I installed this hack as I find it very useful but I couldn't fig. out where to find "can read title but not content option" in the admin cp?
I went to see in the admincp/usergroup but didn't see the option. Another problem was when enable this hack even registered user couldn't go inside the thread?
Can anybody help me how to set up and will this hamper search engine optimization to the thread?

There are 3 locations that you will look at.
1) Usergroup
2) Forum manager
3) Forum Permission for each usergroup

Ok let's try this.
To solve your registered users not being able to view threads check the following.
Go to Usergroup Manager - Registered Users. On the bottom a bar should be added specifying whether a registered user can read thread contents or not. Make sure that is set to yes.
Also make sure the rest of the settings are correct on the top as well.
Can View Forum Yes
Can View Thread Content Yes
Etc.
Make sure you go to the forum permissions and check for the same things.
Now for the plugin, You basically do the exact same as the top, but on the bottom of the page for the Usergroup manager,
Can Read Thread Content - No
Make sure all the other settings are like the registered user's settings in regards to viewing thread content and etc up above the page.
Good luck,
Even I'm confused reading what I wrote so Great Luck with that ;)

a small question.
What are the default settings for this? Installing it would still allow all to view thread and threads content right or will it disable thread viewing for all?
eg do i have to configure just the block forums part where they can't see or to configure the part of what all they can see.. i hope you got the drift.. :)
Am asking this cos running the settings for everyone after installing this would be a problem on my biggish board
The default is closed thread to everyone. You just have to do the permission setup.

Is there any way to close the threads off in ONE forum instead of all the forums?

I just uninstalled this and now I'm getting a bunch of forbidden errors everytime I post a new thread and when I edit a post.
Does this hack make any modifications to the newthread template? I'm not sure how to fix this problem.
Forbidden errors are due to permission setup. I think you have to do your permissions again.
Gayble

Example:
Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /newthread.php on this server.
Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
Apache/1.3.34 Server at www.webmastertrades.com Port 80
newthread.php is on the server and fine..

I don't think this thread make any modification to templates. Do you have other hacks installed on your system?
Also, I cannot access your website.

I tried that and it gave me this picture. How do you setup the forum the show the title without the ability to view thread content?
What you need to do is set the forum permissions for each forum for the Unregistered/Not Logged In usergroup as follows:
Can View Forum Yes
Can View Thread Content No
Can View Others' Threads Yes
vB can't tell who the guest is (whether or not they have posted in the forum before) and so all threads are by someone else. But they are still not allowed to view the content.
Hope that helps. :)

This hack isn't really good if you want your forums to get good SERPS. A spider has the same privileges as a guest :knockedout:

Just a quick question: Will this make the thread titles show up in the today's post to guest? Will this hack achieve this?
I currently have the vB default set to do this, but the threads are not showing up in the "today's post" shown to guest.
Thanks in advance

I read earlier that you were wondering how vBulletin has this feature installed as default. I looked into this and discovered that if you set the usergroup to view the forum and other's thread (set to yes) then set view thread content to (no) then it'll let guests view the thread titles without getting access to the content itself. As for the nice message, one way to fix that would be to look up phrases that contain a part of the default message, then changing that message to make it more pleasing to the eye.
But thanks for the hack anyway, although I learned it's not needed, if it wasn't for this hack, I wouldn't have thought about giving guests this option.

This is a simple but great hack- it's just what I needed to let guests know the forums weren't empty, and give them "teasers" to encourage registration! great job!!

Moya,
I had the same problem trying to get what I wanted to work. However I think I have found the way to achieve it through normal settings.
In the forum permissions for those usergroups that I want to be able to see the forum and the thread titles but NOT the thread content, what I have done is this:
- Set Can View Forum to Yes
- Set Can View Thread Content to No
- Set Can View Others' Threads to Yes
It's the last option there that changes the Thread Title from Private to the actual thread title on the forum home.
This DOES give the usergroup access to the forum. So they can see every thread in the forum, they just cannot see any of the content. Was this the same thing your mod does? If you are even more restrictive (i.e. can see Forum Name, but cannot enter Forum) then I may be very interested in your mod.
