View Full Version : [BB Code] YouTube embedded video
Danny W
03-25-2006, 10:00 PM
I didnt see anyone else release this so i thought i'd release it :)
What this code does is allow your members to embed YouTube Videos
into their posts. As YouTube url's always begin with http://www.youtube.com/v/
all your users need to do is copy and paste the last bit of url (found on the
YouTube site for whatever video they want to post) inside the tags (see the example below).
To Install:
1. Go To Admin CP
2. Scroll down the left nav and select Custom BB Codes
3. Add New BB Code
4. Fill in the following:
Title: YouTube BB Code
Tag: yt (You can change this to whatever you prefer, yt is just nice and small :))
Replacement:<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/{param}"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/{param}" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
Example: ejOJkcs-a7s
Description: Embeds You Tube Videos
Use {Option}: No
Enjoy! (Although its not much, this is my first release on vb.org ;))

It seems to work fine for me. I've tested it in Firefox and IE and both work fine, i also tested several other videos and they all seem to work, i dont know why it wont for you... i'm not much of a an expert when it comes to coding :(

it does work properly, say you go to this site
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPxWW6MU-MQ&feature=Views&page=1&t=t&f=b
take this out of the url link="rPxWW6MU-MQ" and place the BB tags around it in your post
eg:rPxWW6MU-MQ and you will see that it works ;...)

If you mean have a button, it can but i decided not to include one with this because most people have their own styles other than the default, but if you want me to make one for the default skin i'd be happy to. :)

This is awesome I was looking for this because im not familiar with bbcode.
But real quick I actually made it so the videos AUTO PLAY! which is pretty cool so your users dont have to click play, here is that code:
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/{param}&autoplay=1"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/{param}&autoplay=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

Can you assign permissions to embedded media? Meaning you can only allow a certain group (Admins, moderators ect.) to post youtube videos but everyone else can view? Or assign a certain group to be able to watch any videos?

Small problem using this in internet explorer 7. I have this setup with a button icon. A user highlights the video id in there entry and clicks the 'youtube' button. The tags are then insterted, like this:
lkjd9845
But, in IE7 it does this:
lkjd9845
The video just shows a blank white box, unless the user goes in a puts it all on one line. Any idea why this is happening?

The embeded flash is running off youtube's server and there's no html to embed the code. It's all bb code and you're only posting the end numerical value of the video's url.

What part of the code are we to input? Here's the code I'm trying to get embeded:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjVSjQpowMM
Seems that YouTube has changed their code to all start with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v= I've changed the BB Code to start with this, but still no go. I wonder if YouTube caught on to this and changed their code to battle it?
Here's what I changed the code to read:
<object width="425" height="350">
<param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v={param}">
</param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v={param}" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

My you tube BB Code has stopped working in 3.6.4 in firefox browser 1.5.0.8
It mall formats the actual link. You can see an axample at the beginning of an existing post at http://www.physiobob.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3510
The first word was a link working perfectly until a recent upgrade. This might be a firefox issue or it might be a vbulletin issue. This is because I also have now seen that my plugin which does the same thing for adding utube plugins is also asking to install a plug to make it work!
I attach a screen shot of that as well for you interest in case it help to work out where the issue might be coming from.

Recommendation -
When you post a Youtube video near the top of a thread (I'm using the legacy postbit too) and subsequently try to use the Thread Tools drop down to edit/stick/whatever, the menu drops down behind the YouTube layer.
One of my admins suggested the following alteration:
<object width="425" height="350"><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/{param}"></param><embed wmode="transparent" src="http://www.youtube.com/v/{param}" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>

Here's a 100$ question :)
Is there any way to "hide" the YouTube video under a button, like a spoiler tag for instance? Here's an example of what I mean:
http://forum.computergames.ro/11-rpg/53931-star-wars-knights-old-republic-1-2-a/page-16.html#post36649080
The Spoiler tag code looks like this:
<div class="spoiler" style="display:inline"><input type="button" class="button" onClick="showSpoiler(this);" value="Show spoiler: {option}"> <span class="content" style="display:none">{param}</span></div>
And the example: My neat spoiler
Any help would be greatly appreciated :o

Got a browser problem with the videos. Only see a small icon. (see attached)
PS - i know its not the code causing it because others can see the videos.

Nice got this working and it's pretty good! Just want to know tho, when you link like this to photobucket or youtube (embed) does it count again your traffic count (bandwidth) for my site or thiers?

^ I hope assume, it goes from their bandwidth.
Nice little mod. 3 thumbs up from me.
Also made a little button you can use:

One page back you'll find an image to add to your toolbar - https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1114565&postcount=81

Thought this shouldn't be too hard to convert Danny's mod to Google Video...and it isn't.
Here's the Replacement code:
<param name="movie" value="http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docId={param}"></param><embed style="width:400px; height:326px;" id="VideoPlayback" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://video.google.com/googleplayer.swf?docId={param}" flashvars=""></embed>
Works for me in both IE7 and FF1.5. Here it is in action - http://www.shiola.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?p=46719
There's also a Google Icon for your toolbar too.

didn't read the whole thread so I'm not sure if anyone else did this...
but i used the embed to bring in a thumbnail of the vid and linked to the full size one...
<object width="250" height="206"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/{param}"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/{param}" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="250" height="206"></embed></object>
<br>
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v={param}" target="_blank">Click for vid on You Tube</a>
I wanted a button image with proper transparency and I could not find any ready-made, so I made this one.
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/external/2007/03/21.gif
I hope some people find it useful. It is the correct size and with a transparent background, so it will look good with whatever style you have.

My members are asking after being able to integrate YouTube videos directly into posts (http://www.cricketweb.net/forum/showthread.php?t=26228).
How the loading work? Does it cripple dial-up users because it loads the video automatically on viewing that particular thread page?

Does this BBCode work on 3.6.2 and can it be restricted for use only on one section of a forum? Also what are the risks involved in using this code i.e. from hackers?

thx!
Great. It works just fine. I do have a question though.
Is there any possible way to eliminate that white background (red arrows pointing at it), or at least make it the same color as my bckrnd? Btw, I changed the size of YT video (it was 425x250) and made it 275x200.
THANK YOU!
Can any1 help me with the thing above?
THANK YOU!
Btw, I'm running 3.6.7. version.
Thank you in advance!!!

How the loading work? Does it cripple dial-up users because it loads the video automatically on viewing that particular thread page? The original version does not start to stream until you click to start the vid. The stream is served from youtube's servers, so it does not count towards your bandwidth.
One possible problem for dial-up is that once you have started it, clicking on the pause button will not stop the streaming; it will continue to stream until it is fully buffered. This is the same as on youtube itself so I doubt there is anything one can do about it.
