We've just added two new forums! :)

Big boards (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/forumdisplay.php?f=172) - Devoted to discussion related to running a large forum. Here admins of large forums can discuss and share server tweaks/vBulletin modifications and anything else related to running a large community.

Coder's Discussion (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/forumdisplay.php?f=173) - A forum for coders to discuss vBulletin hacking with each other, newbies need not apply! :) Anyone can read threads in this forum, but you must join an extra usergroup to post.

To get access visit your user cp or click here (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/profile.php?do=editusergroups) and join the Coders usergroup.

Enjoy! :)

Thanks especially for the "Big Boards" section. I find myself alone sometimes when I talk about how a hack/mod affects forum performance. Is there any definition of what a "big board" is? My largest has 1.2M posts and 12K members (that's after some pruning).

Can we use the second new one to ask about methods to hack or plug vBulletin?

The second one aims at coder<->coder discussion on a technical level.

The idea behind the new forum is that when vb.org started, it was a coders place and all could discuss modifying vBulletin on the same level (ok some would be more advanced then others, but they talked the same "language" and all had the feeling they wanted to learn from eachother).

Nowadays the majority of the vB.org community are non-coders who don't "talk technical". Because of this it is getting hard to discuss coding issues and as as side-effect will also prevent people who are new to vB coding to get the answers they need to get them started.

If you post in the new forum, you will get a technical discussion. We are hoping that it will also bring back the joy that some of the coders had in discussing/learning modifying had a few years ago.

As a community it is essential that we "invest" in our future (ie. help new coders get started, improve the knowledge of all coders by discussion), and this was going downhill without our own coders discussion corner.

Let's hope that this new forum will give a boost to the group of people that are driving this website....the coders.

I think the big boards forum should be private as I don't think big-board admins will be happy to discuss issues where everyone can see. It's a known fact that one of the first places trolls look for info about 'admins' (of boards they have been banned from) is on the board software's forums.

I also think it would be cool for the coders to have a secret hang-out too - some where without the 'hussle & bussle' of the main site. I know it would be a good resource for non-coders like myself, but in this instance and as Marcho mentioned, I think the coders could do with such perks to help revitalise that feel good factor :)

I think the coder's area should be depending on whether the user actually has a coder title. I'm afraid it's going to be abused as it is now.
Oh, and I agree with Razasharp, although I don't have a big-board :)

As it is now, I see no reason to use the coder forum. It only duplicates what exists now. Having a place for new coders to learn from existing ones is all fine and dandy. But that's one thing, and having a place for existing modification developers to associate and commiserate in private is another. The latter is what has been asked for for some time now. So maybe a third private forum is called for.

Agreed. :(

Why must a coder forum be private? We got something to hide?

I really don't understand this.

Well it's pretty pointless if it's open to everyone, it will be no different to the existing forums - just start filling up with misplaced threads and general junk.

It needs to be private because the coders have asked for such a place for years. And to give it to them and then let even unlicensed people in there is an insult. It tells the people who make this site possible through their contributions that their needs don't matter.

Big Boards is a great addon to learn new things from experienced minds :)
thanks

Both forums are a nice idea, might probably take me years to get there :P
I don't think they should be private^^
People who currently don't have enough experience to take part in the discussions in these forums (like me^^;) might learn a lot by reading the threads in there.
I think the coder's area should be depending on whether the user actually has a coder title.
I think that's a great idea.

maybe coders should stop releasing addons till the forum is made private :D

Strike :D

I can't see why it hasn't been made private either and I'm with the coders on this one - if vborg staff are in any doubt, start a poll/thread that only coders can vote in to ask if they would prefer it private or public (it is their section afterall).

What would be the point of having the section if coders won't use it?
Same with the big boards forum (although I think this really should be at vb.com)

If people can't get what they want here or or begin to feel disenfranchised, they may go elsewhere - I'm sure that's not wha'ts wanted by any of us tho.

I'm new to vB (just bought a license over a month ago). On a different board I use to run I was known for template styling and editing. With vB I think I'll be going the same route as I'm a non-coder by its core definition.

Communities such as vB.org and .vB.com I come here not only to be inspired but to learn from the other members. While we each have our own talents, we're all grouped by the common interest of our boards. Being able to read within a dedicated forum helps me to understand better what goes into the minds and their creations for the purpose of further development. Unless the dedicated forums are preserved for projects that are currenly in process, for someone like myself I could benefit having access there.

"There are currently no public usergroups available for you to join."

Last time I checked, I was a coder. :p

Cool, although I don't really understand the purpose of the requirement to join a usergroup in order to access Coders' Discussion.

It's now automatic ... you don't have "join".

akanevsky

Ok, cool. :) Cause non-automatic join might have been confusing to some.

Nevertheless, I still don't understand the purpose, cause there might be coders who don't participate in coders' discussion - and that should not mean that they are not "coders" :S
