and make sure you place it in the worldmap/geoip/ directory.

I followed all the steps and even double checked them. What does it mean to extract the .dat file? I just downloaded the file at maxmind and uploading it to worldmap/geoip/

..assuming you have an application installed on your PC that handles gzip... I know the latest WinZIP does.

It's faster to FTP the .gz file up to your server and extract it there though.

I'm sorry if this issue has already been addressed, I skimmed the whole thread and didn't see too much discussion on it:

If I replace the map image files with a map of my demographic region, and name them all the same, will this hack still work?

I really like this hack, but don't want the whole world. Just the New England region. If replacing the image is not an option, is there any other way to get this done? It would be a huge marketing step for my site, since we would be able to see areas of New England that we need to concentrate on advertising in.

No one even cares to tell me how to get it extracted. I keep pressing extract, extract, extract. I get the same results. I downloaded the file, then pressed the extract button in winrar but I still get the file thats 14.9 mb. Can anyone tell me what to do specifically?

P.S to the owner of this: You should also include how to extract in the directions. You should be more considerate, not everyone knows how to use winrar.

You arent going to get much help acting like this... With WinRar you can extract just about anything... If you dont have it.. Get it.. rarlabs.com

Once installed, grab the file (gz, rar, zip, WHATEVER) with you right mouse button.. Drag it somewhere and tell it to extract to whatever folder you want. If you cant figure this out, I seriously worry about the condition of your board once you attempt a few hacks

Try extracting it to a different location.. Sounds like a permissions issue

There is no drag drop.

I'm still getting the error because I cannot change the destination path, I've chosen every destination path on my computer it won't change.

Another solution would be for someone to send me the file at my email afterlifex@gmail.com

Quick question. I have some users that are having problems using this as the map is expanding too much (please see attached screen shot).

Is there anyway I can reduce the size that it expands. It appears I have some laptop users with laptops that are clearly as old as the dawn of time!

In the install instructions in the template edits section there is a line that looks like this:

I think changing the "1080,539" will alter the zoom amount.

It also appears in a template that the hack adds - "wmp_maps", I've just tried changing it in that template and that seems to work.

ReadOrDie - I've just read your posts above and I would suggest that if you cannot download a compressed file and uncompress it without guidance then you should not be attempting to hack your forum. I'm really not trying to be insulting but the download and uncompressing of the geo data are probably the most straightforward aspects of getting this hack to work.

However if you are still wishing to go ahead with it I would suggest you contact MaxMind (http://www.maxmind.com/app/contact) - they are the people responsible for that file not the creator of this hack.

I've installed hacks before with no problem. And I followed everyones directions but the only .dat file I get is one with 0 bytes. It would be nice if someone could send it to my email afterlifex@gmail.com or at least put the file somewhere where I can download it. I tried extracting with five different programs, they all produce the same results can someone help me? All I need is this file.

you just need to add that to the navbar ... its in your Styles & Templates then Style Manager then after that go to edit templates in the drop down and search for Navigation / Breadcrumb Templates its in there :)

Not accurate at all??? Sounds like you have the permissions set wrong

It's actually very accurate, even with the free version of the IP location database. As for detail, it's not meant to show a lot of detail for each member. If you want that there's a Google Map hack or www.frappr.com.

Good grief, if 215 people can manage it its not going to be that hard eh!


Download the file and use winrar to extract it, then you will find a .dat file in the folder winrar creates, Upload this file to the requisite folder on your server then follow the rest of the instrucions.

It takes at most 10 mins to install this it is an awesome hack made very easy to install by the developer, you coming here with attitude does not make people want to go out of their way to help..

We do as well and it doesn't seem a major problem - see: http://forums.randi.org/worldmap.php and after all isn't this just a bit of fun? Doesn't need to be incredible accurate to give some sense of the distribution of the members of your board?

(Plus it seems to match up very closely with the other non-public trackers we have on our forum.)

ReadOrDie. Follow...these...instructions.

See that little folder icon under the "download" on the right hand side of the screen? Click on it. Then click save. Then click desktop. This will save the zip to your desktop. Double click the downloaded folder. Extract to desktop. The "read me" txt will point you in the right direction.

Now to the hack. It's a nice idea. but it is rather pointless. Even the super-expensive version is only approx 75% accurate, so what's the point? I would rather allocate this hack's space on my vBulletin to something like FlashChat.

Hmmm...This is strange. Doesn't matter what i do in the options, it doesn't seem to affect how the hack operates. For example, I try to change the marker to a diamond, but it stays as a cross. And even the templates don't change!

Also, how do you prevent the map from expanding when you place the mouse over it?

Could anyone offer some assistance in decompressing this downloaded file as per step 5 in the hack instructions?

I've downloaded the GeoLiteCity.dat.gz file from http://www.maxmind.com/app/geolitecity, and uploaded it to my server; no problems thus far. However, when attempting to decompress the .sz file from the SSH command line with tar -xvfz GeoLiteCity.dat.gz, I receive various tar errors.

For those of you who have had success with the file/install, how did you decompress the file? Am I using incorrect flags for the untarring?

Let me start by saying this is a awesome hack :) I have read through all the posts and gone through all the "how do I unzip a file" and "how do I stop the auto resizing" questions :) I finally got to someone who is looking for the same thing I am.

Basically, is there a way to modify the "postbit", and maybe "memberlist" templates to have a link that tosses you to a map showing that particular user?? My forum is basically used for entertainment and it would be neat after having 2 weeks worth on conversations with members to click and see where they are in the world. The way it is set up now seems more like statistics, something the mods would use, not necessarily the members.

I love it though :D:D .... please help :banana:

i agree im going to remove mine... i dont see a point for it no more and once you have over like 2000 members the map looks like sh!t.... the dots are so close together and really you cant tell what is what... ashame he dont build on it but for now im going to remove mine...

Uhh, that's what it's supposed to do. It shows your membership world coverage. Nothing else. You aren't supposed to be able to see every little dot.

Some cool upgrades to this mod may be sunlight shading. Another one is alt tags (with imagemap) for member name when the member's dot is moused over.

But perhaps a more easy mod to implement would be a city name next to the member's name on the whosonline page and the member's city in their profile.

Resize the map that you decide to use (in your maps/ folder) with a local graphics app. Actually come to think of it this probably doesn't work. Can't help ya.

...Oops.... one more :confused: When we try to run the cron the first time we get an error message asking if the file is corrupt. The only thing that we can think of that might cause this was uploading in the wrong format (we're using automatic mode). Do any of these files have to be uploaded in binary? What else might cause this error? :confused:

if you look in the screenshots, it shows the map in the Member List and Who's Online...

The CORE INSTALL only puts a link in the navbar, but if you follow 'Optional', then it also puts it in those 2 sections ;)

There appears to be a bug with this. We checked this in two separate vB forums. No matter how we have the map(s) set up in ACP it always shows both maps :surprised: Do we have to hard code one of the maps out of the code to get it to not show up? :confused:

Although I did evertything precisely as your install text file but there is still only one problem which I can not solve . :confused:

When I click "Members List", there is a small gray space between my vBulletin and the scroll bar as you can see in my attachment, but when I click "World Members List", there is no any space between them because my vBulletin extend over the scroll bar.

How can I solve this problem?

There appears to be a bug with this. We checked this in two separate vB forums. No matter how we have the map(s) set up in ACP it always shows both maps :surprised: Do we have to hard code one of the maps out of the code to get it to not show up? :confused:

Both maps show up normally on the worldmap.php page.

On memberlist.php the map showing all members should show up by itself.

On online.php the map showing only who is online should show up by itself.

That is if you correctly followed the install instructions.

Although I did evertything precisely as your install text file but there is still only one problem which I can not solve . :confused:

When I click "Members List", there is a small gray space between my vBulletin and the scroll bar as you can see in my attachment, but when I click "World Members List", there is no any space between them because my vBulletin extend over the scroll bar.

How can I solve this problem?

You need to change onmouseover() events to onclick() events. That is, change occurrences of:

onmouseover="wmpsu('wmp_members', 1080, 539)"

to:

onclick="wmpsu('wmp_members', 1080, 539)"

You might want to check to see if their IP address is being recorded. Mine shows from Australia.

Yes: it's extremely annoying. Scan up the thread a bit: I posted the code previously, for replacing onmouseover() routines with onclick() routines, which will cause the expansion, etc., to occur only when you click the map, rather than simply roll the mouse over the top of it.

I've found display and use to be far nicer be separating out the expand/collapse functions from the map proper: my own display has to links just above the map: one to expand it, one to collapse.

I've just switched my test board to vB 3.6b1, and am re-installing all my hacks one by one. WorldMap seems to have a problem that I've never encountered when running it on 3.5.4:

After going through all the fresh install features, I went to run the cron task manually the first time via the 'Run Now' option in AdminCP, and recieved the following error, which recurs each time I attempt to run it:

Warning: getimagesize(): PNG file corrupted by ASCII conversion in /worldmap/class_wmp.php on line 140
Could not get map size.

To verify, the /worldmap/ directory is CHMODed to 777, and all files in the standard locations -- an exact mirror of how I have it configured on my 3.5.4 production board.

Any thoughts?

To make sure your navbar displays properly...
Add to the very first line:

If you're like me, I felt the mouseover/out resizing of the images were too distracting. I played and played around with the code trying to get it to work like I wanted it to. It was mentioned to use onclick instead of onmouseover. This will work, but it doesn't do anything to get the image smaller again. So add ondblclick instead of onmouseout, and it works pretty good. It'll expand the image if you click it, and it'll shrink it back if you double click it.

Edit 2, I have a couple suggestions..

1. This info should be in the standard install directions (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showpost.php?p=1039554&postcount=388)
2. In regards to the "OnClick" and "OnDblClick" in the code suggested in #1, I switched them on my site
3. The directions in #1 are for the template (including the "$stylevar[htmldoctype]")
4. Why don't we conditional out the Who Is Online Map on worldmap.php when "Plot a World Map with the Locations of those Who Are Online" is set to "NO" in the AdminCP?

I am back... I have one more suggestion that I just did for my site...


Why don't we split the CRON job to two seperate activities? What I did was modified the part of the cron file as in this modification that says:

$wmp->plot('members');
$wmp->output();

And I removed the following:

Then I created a seperate Cron file where I did the opposite and I saved that as a CRON job!

Now, I have my server generate my Member Map once a day at a slow time (3AM) and the Who's online is generated every 15-minutes. Generating the map of who is online takes much less computing power then the member map!

Do I need to insert a varname for the scheduled tasks part? Also down the bottom of the scheduled tasks page it has a drop down menu called 'products'. I imagine that I select world map plotter with this menu?

Okay, all installed, it looks awesome.

In answer to my question (in case someone else wants to know) I set the varname to WMP and selected the world map plotter as the product in scheduled tasks.

I have changed the behaviours. Onmouseover to onclick, which works well, but the mouseout code to ondblclick, doesn't seem to work properly. It just makes the page move a bit. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong please?

Again, I have to ask--I've reinstalled this, downloaded and installed the most current GeoCityLite.dat file, checked the permissions on the directories, checked the chronjob, and I haven't updated my forum to 3.6; I'm still running 3.5.4. As the developer's gone off, could anyone give me a hand with this and tell me why it might have stopped updating? My members loved it, but it's not much use when it won't update. My undying gratitude for any help. :(

Hi Mate

Some hosts don't allow cron jobs to run automatically. I had this problem on a singles site I run. You should maybe check with your host that there is no restriction. This is the norm on many clustered servers.

Quick question - what if you don't want a world map - but a country specific one?

99% of our user base will be in the UK, so a UK map would be great, but if its a world one (especially if you can't zoom in, or can you?) then it'd be little use.

The maps are working great! I do have one skin option wherein the map width causes my borders to break. I've found what appears to be the max size on mouseover. How do I go about downsizing the original map (realistic) to fit within my table? Thanks.
This appears to be a problem with Firefox2. IE is okay, except borders are broken on mouseover.

Disregard. Though it does break borders on expansion, that's minor. The actual problem was realized when I removed the link from my navbar. Yep! So, now I'll just modify to add another navbar row. Thanks.

To have it plot ALL registered members, and not just those that have posted, do this:

In class_wmp.php, change this:

"SELECT post.ipaddress " .
"FROM " . TABLE_PREFIX . "post AS post, " .
TABLE_PREFIX . "user AS user " .

"AND user.lastpost = post.dateline"

To this:

"SELECT ipaddress " .

It would be better to have it use their latest post IP if available, then fall back to their registration IP if they have never posted, but I haven't gotten around to trying to do that yet... Maybe the hack author will. ;)


Has this idea been updated at all? Is it possible to use registration IP's for all members, then update the map location whenever anyone logs on, based on their logon IP? I have some members who travel a lot, and it'd be awesome to see them pop up where they actually are whenever they log on, even if they don't post.

OK , I fiqured this out .... You only unrar the GeoLiteCity.dat.gz file that extracts the folder called GeoLiteCity.dat that contains the GeoLiteCity.dat that is 26.0 MB (27,304,889 bytes) ... The folder GeoLiteCity.dat is the one you upload to your server ..

I recently upgraded to 3.7 (A WEEK AGO to the latest ver. and while I had RC1 a friend had installed this Mod, After the upgrade I had 5 Templates that needed to be reverted. When I reverted the Templates it deleted the code for this Mod, so I reinstalled it and where I had 1 world map that was automatic, now I have 2 maps Registered and Posted Users, further more It deleted the Help button next to the user cp in the nav bar and replaced Help with Member World Map. ( Now the Map is an option) :eek: I really need the Help button in the Nav Bar and I really do not care for the 2 maps. The registered Users Map is enough. I by no means am any type of Coder and I really have a Hard time doing things such as Mods. But I can Follow simple instructions if you can help me get my Help button back and have only 1 map that is automatic when you click Members. If Not, Not a problem, I will have to uninstall it. Hopefully I won't with a little help. Please advise :confused:

I forget the exact wording, but you need to use the rebuild option to run the cron job or wait until the cron job runs normally for the change to take effect.

Thanks for the mod, it works great! I've got it running in the members area and in the Who's Online. I did take the advice of a few and split the cron job. I have the members map update once a day and the Who's Online map update every minute. I do wish that the dots would show the IP address if you hovered over them.

Could someone please advise me how to uninstall this Mod. I ran it briefly when I had vB 3.8, but after upgrading to vB4 I lost all my links to this mod. I still see it on my vBulletin server directory and would like to remove it the proper way.
