as a complete noob to the forum world, how would i set the forum display the same as this site

ie

the postbits on the left instead of above the post

or if you could point me to the relevant post

Go to your

AdminCP -> vBulletin Options -> Style & Language Settings -> Use Legacy (Vertical) Postbit Template

Set this to 'Yes'.
