Summary:

Allows Administrators/Supermods to ban a user from a particular thread.
Most useful if you have a flame started and you dont want to lock the entire thread or ban the user entirely; just keep them out of the thread.


Features:

1. Allow Banning of users from a particular thread.
2. Can only ban if person has SuperModerator or Higher Permissions.
3. Cannot ban Mods/Supermods/Admins.
4. Can clear all bans in a particular thread, or bans from All threads.
5. Can ban/unban user from a single menu when clicking their name.
6. Page to display Forum Wide Thread Bans.

Also if possible make it so admins or mods cannot be banned. Or just remove the option from the drop down for admin/mod usergroups.

Hi,

I've did everything you said but there is a problem.
When I press on a user, the menu shows up with 'view profile' etc. but not the one with 'Ban this user from thread'.

When I press "Thread Tools" the following is added:

Clear This Threads Bans
Clear Every Threads Bans

So where can the problem be? (Do I have to rebuild something? If so, say the good words or steps for it please!)

Well, the temp. is updated for 3.5.4, so I don't know.

There's one for threaded, liner, and hybrid modes, and one for the thread tools, search thread, rate thread, and display modes. As it is, adding the code to every instance of that makes the ban options appear in every one of those dropdown menus.

Hmms I dont know an easier way to do it right now without adding another query, I dont think its that big of a deal. Im making a small mod so you can see forum wide bans branched down into each thread as it is; adding it so it says "ban" or "unban" depending on their status is really not something im worried about right now.

Hmm after digging through the mountains of includes.. I think i found a way to handle that conditional template for Ban / Unban.

Its weird cause the actual postbit variables ie. $btu cant be seen directly from the showthread.php file cause its in includes/class_postbit.php. So the workaround is adding global $btu; to a function using a hook in that file...

Will update it in a few min.

Hmm, would have to do some additional checking of permissions.. as for now just test if they have global moderator permissions.

Even so however, I don't really see how I could implement it without making it an option.. cause I doubt most boards would want their members able to ban ppl from threads regardless if they created it or not.

hmm Supermods should be able to.I'll investigate. Just I had a supermod today say they couldn't do anything.

Edit: I was able to view the option in a test super mod account so maybe the user's secondary usergroup has something to do with it, though that's a hidden admin one.

I'll keep you posted.

I dont plan on making much other changes from this point forward as the code is starting to become quite large for a plugin imo.. the product file is already like 8.5kb.

And the data is stored in the datastore, so.. you could copy it before you upgrade or w/e if you had to.

Not private ... but we have some users that invite others to a specific argumentation to show a specific result . I think it is very near to your code but in difference of (==) & ( != )when you check can users access to thread or not . It means the thread starter or moderator can specify usernames that they can reply to the thread instead of specifying those can not reply.

I disagree with bumping mods up to super. If I allow my mods to ban people, then they should be able to use this. This would be perfect for me if only it allowed standard mods to use it. Shame really, just what I wanted...

It will be there and you can change it to whatever you want :)

only admins are allowed to view my archive....and i password protected it just to be sure lol would that work for you?

then to top it all off i added the HIDE ressurection to the forum...gave out admin and registered user id's...told everyone that it was open to the public now to use the hidden block id's....so maybe you could try that...put him in a different usergroup...just a thought...

or just change the permissions on the user in the usermasks i think it is...

I have a suggestion for your plugin. I think it would be very usefull if you could add something that says this user has been banned from this thread. For example maybe make a big banned from thread sign pop up in the upper right hand conner of his posts in that thread. This gives the mods a record that he was banned at least.

Another good addition would be for the board to Automatically PM the user who has been banned notifying the user that he has been banned from a thread.

Finally a timelimit option would be neat too.

Take these suggestions as you will. I do want to say that I see #1 as very important. There needs to be a record of who was banned where.

I've double and triple checked and everythin is correct according to instructions and it still doesn't work.

One thing that I did do is add the code in both "postbit" and "postbit_legacy" templates. Would that make a difference? Once I save the templates is there anything else that needs to be done?

Can you add to the Thread Log (in a thead, Thread Tools->Edit Thread), there is a log there that shows everything that was done by mods/admins. Can you append thread bans to that log and show the user that was banned from the thread along w/ the MOD that did it.

Also, allowing this to extend to usergroups would be awesome. I'd love to give a select group of users the ability to ban users from threads.

You don't need a hack for that. That's what User Forum Permissions are for.

I don't agree with users being able to ban from threads. They're not staff and you can't trust who will use the feature maturely. It should be a staff only option.

I did test this back when it came out and I was running vB 3.5. Moderators can thread ban but only in forums they're assigned to. I believe the conditional is "canmoderate" and I like it that way. A different conditional would need to be used to allow users to ban from own threads and it's not worth it in my mind.

I can't use this plugin at the moment though because I'm running vB 3.6.

I want to give moderator this power. How can i do that ??

I'm sure there's a cleaner way to do it, but this worked for me. I edited the plugin 'btu_canban' by adding this line at the end:

Also, this is also accessable to the moderators, which I don't have a problem with as I handpick my staff, however the way it is listed in the drop down menue gives the impression that they can only unban as there is no ban option in the dropdown.

I think you may be looking at thw wrong drop down. Try clicking on the members name...

That should be possible by simply adding a <if> statement to that section of code in the template. Someone else would need to post the exact code though.

Ok, since I like this thread and the comments added from Stoebi. I will assist you in the how to prevent mods from using the clear all or "Every" option.

As you know, a moderator using the added code provided, can ONLY clear bans from THAT thread that they are allowed to moderate in. Should they "try" the "every" option, it will fail. This was the design of Stoebis moderator code.

So should you STILL need to feel you want this blocked. Here is the code.
In the Style Manager, Edit SHOWTHREAD


Find:
<if condition="$show['btu_canban']">

Replace with:
<if condition="$show['btu_canban'] AND is_member_of($bbuserinfo, 6)">

The "6" is the default for the admin usergroup, meaning only anyone who is in part of that group, will be allowed to see those 2 options in the drop down.

Problem solved.

Is there a way to ban a group from posting to a thread? I have a debate forum where only two members can post in the thread and all the other members should post in the commentary thread. But sometimes the other members will start posting in the debate thread. It would be great to use this mod to limit only the two debaters, but where all others only have view priv.

Anyways can this mod be made to do this? Or is there another mod out there already that has this feature?

I had the same problem on 3.6.5, I think thats because the title of a plugin was not correctly set.
After I installed it the plugin was called "btu_manage", and it should have been "btu_manager". A small change, but the hack worked fine afterwards.

I got it working by changing the database entries but it has a glitch.
Everything works with one problem:
If I unban a member from the View All page, it unbans them but redirects me to
a permission denied page.Other than the weird redirect, everything works for me on vb3.7.0beta5
Maybe a more experienced coder can add more input.
I changed the following in the product-btu.xml file before importing.
Original Code:

I have edited my template as the author suggested in the original product read me, but I can't see anywhere on the thread tools that allows me to ban a user....
looks like I am doin something wrong...or not doing something at all
