Does vB 3.5.3 have any feature where you can create a private forum or just a thread, accessible with a password?
The ladies on my forum want a "ladies only" section, password protected so the men can't read it.
Is this do-able?

Since vB3.0 you can already create a Private Forum, using Forum Permissions. It is also possible to password protect a forum.
All already there.

It is one of the Forum Settings (AdminCP->Forum Manager->edit forum)

Hmm with what you want, you might want to look into a hack that is here at vb.org, that will put user in a (secondary) usergroup, based on profile fields. You could probably use that to create a Male & a Female usergroup.

Just in case you didn't find them yet:
- Add User to Primary Usergroup Based on Value of Custom Profile Field (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=82992&highlight=usergroup+registration)
- Add User to Secondary Usergroup Based on the Value of a Custom Profile Field at Reg. (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=82993&highlight=usergroup+registration)
