I just upload a new package because I found a typo with the first one which prevented you from adding additional modules to a module set. To upgrade, all you need to do is upload the latest upload/forums/gee/gars/gars_class_admin.php file (replacing your old one).

Hey Looney,

Yes, limiting it to 1 forum means that you can not organise categories via sub forums as per the PRO version, however there are crap loads of sites that simply have 1 forum where they dump their articles, tutorials or reviews in so its perfect for those guys. Its also perfect for those that want a particular forum to be specialised (i.e. using the .org install/release add on I did). People may already have an article/review solution, but want a different type of solution for another aspect of their site (ie. maybe a recipe location on their site, or a download area).

GARS is pretty freaking versatile, flexible and customisable. I think people will find loads of use for this LITE version.

The default header image thing is not in the LITE version and optionally gives users the ability to upload an image for the header. This image appears in the title of the GAR as well as the threadbit. Some don't use this feature anyway as there is also a 'gallery' of sorts where you as the admin can upload a selection of images for users to choose from to customise their entries.

The important thing is that even though it is 'LITE' and there are a small handful of features that exist in the PRO version, there is crap loads of functionality and features which will benefit countless sites without ever needing those features found in the PRO version. Check out the link in the first thread for the on-line manual. Hopefully that will help give you an idea of the possibilities with the system.

Webtemplates is to make extra pages that use the vBulletin system, while GARS instead uses vB and transforms it into a tutorial/review/article/blog/whatever you can dream of really.

yeah it installed the templates . i refresh and then the only thing in admincp is under (vbulletin options.

Look, dont mess with this unless you are told by secret service agents eating bannanas. Basically its a quick hint for GARS to spawn itself which saves a query to the datastore on non GARS pages. This value is fed by the GARS Settings admincp page. Tweak it there. Goodbye!

I have set up a recipes section and everything will go in there but is it then possible to set it for example to have different categories such as chicken, beef, fish etc? Also, can I change it to say recipes instead of articles and if so where do I do that?

Hi there. You would need to orgainize your categories via sub-forums which isnt possible with the LITE version.

yes, the PRO version would allow you to apply types to several forums so you could create categories that way however give this one a go for awhile, you may also find that it will serve your needs without needing to buy the PRO version :D

Everything is filled out. It seems to have something to do with the length. If I make a smaller message it will work. The text I have is about 4000 characters, well under the 100k limit for a post that I have set.

Is there another option I need to look at somewhere?

I read his forum, appears there's a compatability issue with ECReleases (which does the same thing with the install feature) which may account for a couple bugs.

The article length problem sounds like you have a low character setting in VBOptions. If you have the same problems in a non article post, then check the "Maximum Characters Per Post" under "Message Posting and Editing Options" in the Options

Yea, I checked that. I am able to post the exact same text as a regular post w/o any issues, but when I try to post it as an article it will not submit and I just get the message and some of the form is cleared.

hmm, then maybe it's another hack then. Geek did address the form cleared problem in either this or the install thread, as I had a problem with text not showing up for the checkboxes.
Just the first thing I would look at, as mentioned earlier, there are a couple other hacks that cause problems, or are set wrong in admin. other than check for those, like in the forum manager settings for that board, can't really suggest anything else. When Geek gets back (I think wednesday) maybe he will know.

ecReleases for one, I believe if you check his forum, there's another one there. Both are popular ones. Reason I mentioned hacks is because I have a couple that are set by board in the forum manager, and I always forget about them and start pulling my hair till I remember. :)

I'm trying this, but so far can't really see what it's doing or meant to do. As nearly as I can tell, it simply changes the terminology use for a given forum, such that posts are "Articles" instead of Posts. Oh, and it adds a header image.

What am I missing? I would expect that an "Article" could be associated with another forum category, and would be "featured" there.

So, other than slightly altering the appearance and terminology of the threads/posts within a particular forum, what other features does this have? I have a suspicion that I'm missing the point...

In particular, I don't understand the "feature" settings, such as "Auto-Feature new threads". Feature them where? How? How does a featured article differ from an un-featured article?

Actually, it just take some playing around. The admin is a bit... non-intuitive, to me, but through experimentation, I see how the forum is modified by the modules, and how you can have different modules for forumdisplay and showthread. Also, you have your own replacement templates, so one can customize even further.

I'm liking it. One small glitch... in forumdisplay, the article preview module doesn't float/wrap around the graphic. Thus if I replace the default header image with a banner-sized image, the preview text will be pushed all the way to the right, instead of flowing around the image, or showing underneath.

Which template would I edit to change this?

I fixed the copyright tag, it's the GARS_powered_by phrase. The copyright entity is missing its terminal semi-colon.

Another question: in forumdisplay, my synopsis is being truncated. Since the synopsis doesn't show when the article is being viewed, the extra text is essentially lost.

I see the "Maximum character count for displaying synopsis in forumdisplay." setting in admincp, however, changing it doesn't appear to have any affect.

How can I force GARS to display the entire synopsis?

I am having the same issues. I have disabled max post size, enabled max post size and set it to 100k characters... nothing seems to work.

It will let me create a new article if i just type a few words in the initial create thread area, then I have to go back and edit the article and put the actual content in.

This is a fix to the synopsis issue:

Currently, it is hard-coded to only show the first 250 characters, even though there is an admincp setting to override this.

To fix, open the gars_underscore_class.php file and replace the snip_and_parse function with this version:

I'm very sorry to inform you that i must click Uninstall as liked GARS lite so much i went and bought the Full Version :D
So ummm anywhere to click for preimum installs? lol

just 1 little thing, the instructions to upgrade from GARS lite to the full version were not very clear and i got a error when i imported the product (even thou i allowed overwrite), but i just uninstalled GARS lite and installed GARS and away it went... didnt even loose a single article!

I really dont mind paying what i consider a very small amount for what i can see is a great product. Excellent work!

There should be no reason a mod rewrite wouldnt work, however I know that vbseo built support for additional GARS pages which is really the only thing I can think of that would require extra work.

I dont know about Lite, I use to Paid version and you have two options. Add images to a gallery, and specify a Default image for each of your custom "forums".

Get the paid version its 100 times better than the lite.

I have installed this version, and am slowly figuring it out. I think I've got it so far.

My question is about the user end of things. Once it's configured, how do my members access it? Do they go into a specific forum? I tried to make a forum that was called "Ratings Reviews and Evaluations" but didn't see any of the GAR's settings to enable it to be a review fourm.

How do I create the forum itself?

I installed this and made a GARS review forums....however I made this forums permission to 'moderate new threads'...unexpectedly I had every forums that was lower in order also have this attribute. I assume this is a bug.

I disabled the plugin. Double checked all my settings..then enabled the plugin once again. All seems normal now. I am not sure what went wrong.

I've recently installed this mod. Everything went smoothly, except for this:

Database error in vBulletin 3.6.3:

Invalid SQL:
SELECT phrasetypeid id FROM phrasetype WHERE fieldname='GARS_4_phrases';

MySQL Error : Unknown column 'phrasetypeid' in 'field list'
Error Number : 1054


I get this error when I go in to edit a term set. I can see the fields, and I can hit save, but when I do, the whole page goes to this error. When I first access this page, the error is down at the bottom.

It's looking like the installer just didn't create the appropriate table?

Anyone have any insight?

I ended up buying the full GARS ;). Worked out better for my needs that way.

This installs fine on 3.7 but I get no GARS in the AdminCP, I have to manually enter in the gars_admin.php to get to any gars menu, but even this page does not do anything, my forum chosen for the reviews does not show like the screenshots.

Anyone have this issue and if so how do I fix it?

Is GARS PRO supporting vB3.5.4, I need this article system for various forums (4 to be exact) but I noticed GARS needed vB3.6/3.7.

As my vB licence is inactive atm (owned licence) I made the mistake to install a vB3.5.4 about a month ago instead of renewing and using the latest version. I now have customized a load of the forums and I don't have the time to upgrade the forums and do this all over again and thus wanting to stay with vB3.5.4
