Installation

Please 2.00 previous version lift and again install...

Installation in two easy steps:

1. Upload all the files from the "files" directory in this zip into your forums directory.

2. Import product-1901.xml as a product. (Via "Plugin System" > "Manage Products" > "Add/Import Product" in your Admin CP.)
Upgrade Info

Allow Overwrite [YES]

If you upgrate this sw you will have some problem, first you must remove the old versiyon and install the new version. Then you won't have any problem

adminnewsx.php == forum/admincp/adminnewsx.php
xmlparser.php == forum/includes/xmlparser.php
cpnav_rssview.xml == forum/includes/xml/cpnav_rssview.xml

Cool, off to try it now. GREAT work, thanks so much for the self-working version!

This solves one of the biggest problems with RSS feed posters... too much noise that users end up tuning out. Not enough "filtering" going on. This provides the facility for news, to foster discussion, and is a nice diversion for visitors too!

Would love to see the option for a "Post this news story" link or pulldown option... the user could then easily generate a new post to foster discussion with friends. (Perhaps each feed could have a preferred forum in which these news posts would go. Or perhaps the user could choose which forum.) This would encourage folks to pick and choose interesting news stories to discuss, and would integrate this feature back into the forum concept all the more. Just brainstorming...

I had similar problems when I tried Inferno RSS, specifically for this module (before the self-working version was available.) Perhaps it's got something to do with how my host has disabled allow-url-fopen (http://wiki.dreamhost.com/index.php/CURL)?

I have cURL enabled and working... in fact, ArticleBot works perfectly for me.

Would love to get this working, I've been anxious to see something like this for a while!

Alphabetical is nice, makes it easy to peruse the list if you have a lot of them. I think this hack is extremely well done. Installed, working great on my forum. I assume that the difference between this one and the Inferno version, is that this one does NOT make new threads/posts...?

That's what I'm trying to figure out (did not try the Inferno edition, I suspect that you use the inferno hack to add your rss feeds, and therefore, that hack might automatically post new threads, but, I'm not sure).

Okay, how about just some confirmation that this hack does, in fact, use the PHP option allow_url_fopen? My (otherwise very permissive) host has identified this function as a security risk and has disabled it (http://wiki.dreamhost.com/index.php/Allow_url_fopen).

And so I am guessing that's why this hack doesn't work for me.

Now, I've asked for any feedback so that I may get it working. Ideally this hack would use cURL or one of the safe workarounds listed in the above wiki article. You know, to eliminate the possibility of the security risk it apparently presents. And also to allow this hack to work for me finally. :nervous:

Barring that, I'd be happy to compile my own version of PHP with allow_url_fopen enabled... as long as I get some response that this function is required for Atakan's hack to work.

Even weirder is that those files weren't included in the initial upload. I reuploaded, hoping for some kind of fix/update, but this hack still doesn't work for me. So really, what's changed since then?

Atakan, if you're using any of JumpD's hard ArticleBot work, you've got to clear it with him first. Yes, integration with ArticleBot would rock my world, since it works great for me (while Inferno, and your hack, currently do not...) but respect for JumpD and his copyright is for more important!

Let me say that your hack is very cool and really admired. I wish I could get it to work. I'm assuming the inclusion of JumpD's ArticleBot files in your 2nd upload was just a mistake? Therefore, some communication would be appreciated right about now.

I have still recieved no responce from my PM to this person. This is a scary thing to me since (not saying this is the case) anyone could theoretically include altered files in a hack for another hack and users can unwitingly upload them as a group and break another hack. Or they could include malicious code and guess who gets the blame.

Finally I have some time to read all your replies.

First of all you are so important for me. ( Unfortunately, Tralala said that he has being punk'd ) :( My main language is Turkish.

Now, I am just making some little installments. I think the problem is :

Unix and windows servers compile some characters differently. For example the characters like ?,Ş,?,?. I am working on it.

Im trying to manage CSS problem. I will publish the fixed version as soon as possible.

That would be hot, but probably hard to add as you need an icon/button next to every news item.

Anybody have any luck fixing the "Syndicated content not available" message after installing this hack? Like a previous poster mentioned, my host is Dreamhost.

I was able to get this fixed. The reason it was breaking is that many hosting providers have disabled fopen. As mentioned in a previous post in this thread the fopen calls needed to be replaced with cURL. I did a little research to figure out what needed to be done.

You need to edit the includes/xmlparser.php file and replace the render_news function with the code below:

New function (use this):

I was able to get this fixed. The reason it was breaking is that many hosting providers have disabled fopen. As mentioned in a previous post in this thread the fopen calls needed to be replaced with cURL. I did a little research to figure out what needed to be done.

You need to edit the includes/xmlparser.php file and replace the render_news function with the code below:

New function (use this):

Hey question, we like this hack alot, is there a way to make it so it only shows a preview of each news article shown? Like a small preview, few sentances, then after that it will say "More" which is a link to the orig article so they can be guided to the full news shown?
