Mark 'read' and "View First Unread" feature

Mark 'read' and "View First Unread" link feature

I want to add these features to my Blog Manager but I have never researched them...
Does anyone know how these features work?

Can you provide a simple outline?
I just need something that can put me in the right direction. :)
