temporary addition to usergroup with automatic revert?

I want to be able to give away month long memberships to my gold group, but I need them to automatically revert to registered users after a certain amount of time - as it would do if a paid subscription were cancelled.

How can I accomplish this?

add the user manually to the subscription (in adminCP -> subscription manager, there is a add user option in the drop down where edit is the default option)
