Now here me out before flaming me saying that theres already 2 shoutboxs for 3.5.

Neither of the two current shoutboxs fit my needs. The vBshout (AJAX) has loads of bugs in it and kills my server. The other one is too simple and theres no way of editing shouts at all. I would like someone to port this one because I think it is better than any of these shoutboxs that are out now. Any help? :D

Please? I really think that we need a better shoutbox for 3.5 than vBshout. Especially now that servers are starting to ban it from being used and shut sites down for using it.

If anyone is up for this then please reply.

Even a fresh coding that has similar features would be great to have. As long as it doesn't do the AJAX autorefresh its good.

severs ban from using ajax ?

do u know why ?

Because of how often it autorefreshes. It hogs up your bandwith aswell. I have read on some servers that they do not allow vBulletins to have that because of how much it lags the server.

Check out mine at HERE (on the right) (http://www.cornishserver.com), it's called PABOX (http://www.phparena.net/scripts.php?script=pabox) and so simple to install. (if you use vBA or vBP).

p.s. my site down while upgrading to 3.5.4, be back in 2 hours..lol

thanks I will give that a go ...

what does it want to know your databes name for ? is that forum database? does it pull names from that or somthing?

I like ya site mate - Im wanting to upgrade mine from 3.5.0 to the latest but really dreading the wiping out it will do of most of my template changes :( can I ask if you have the same problems with upgrading?

also - how do you run your server queries on the header? what produces those stats?

sorry for all the questions... thanks for the chatbox link.

Right, firstly the PABOX. I gave it it's own database, 5 tables, not Ajax, user input their names each time. I know it's a drawback, but minor for such an easy to use and maintain shoutbox.

I have about 14 mods/hacks installed, but have upgraded at every step so it has been fairly painless. All I can suggest is to keep a rational/logical list of what you have installed and work through the template changes accordingly. Took me 35 minutes this morning, and went faultlessly. The only pain in the butt were the file changes for the Arcade and vBA/Links add-ons. One benefit that I have with my hosting plan is that I have a resellers account so create my own set of backups along the way, if it all goes pear shaped it's a quick job to re-install a backup.

The header I used a 'global_start' variable to a third party script that my in-house coder created, but it uses SQuery/gSQuery for the results. Matt is a little tardy in letting the code loose, but if you're interested I'll have a word and see what can be done.

hi thanks for the reply... yeah its a nice shoutbox but lack of tie in it has with my forums means I will keep looking.

yeah - as for the upgrading - every time I have the opportunity to record my work I never do! :( i think this is because i never quite know what Im doing so most of my work is trial and error ... changing little bits here and there till its right .. anyway - I will have to sit down and search through my templates one of these days and make some proper notes as to what Ive put where!

I looked into using squery in the past - but almost got a nose bleed by how confusing it was to me ! lol... thanks for the offer but I think i'll give this a miss at the moment.

Those aren't worth having, too many people can spam them up easilly.

I too would love a port of Shoutbox Hack 1.04b. I was actually disappointed to find the only other version is the AJAX one. After using that version for a month I found my bandwidth skyrocketing. People were also complaining about how they couldn't scroll up to read previous entries because when it refreshed, it would drop the scrollbar back down.

Also extremely disappointed that "Chatbox Lite" (was confused when I couldn't find a regular "Chatbox" version) has no moderation options (can't edit/delete shouts). I have no idea why other than they just didn't feel like doing it.
