This would permit a member, while composing a post, to enter an optional list of bibliographical references, either by vBcode or by a set of fields. These would be customizable in the admincp (does not have to be written references).
At a minimum, it should display a list in small font at the bottom of the post.
Bonus features:
Hide this tool behind a show/hide button so as to not bog down the Create Thread/Post screen (this feature might be intrusive for frequent posters who don't cite).
Display a link or a button somewhere in the post or postbit which would display the references when clicked or moused-over.
Optional explicit or hidden references (e.g. poster chooses between the list and the button/link)
Optional hyperlinks for each reference.
Optional affiliate links - Amazon, for example.
Optional ability to qualify how the reference is being used (example scenarios: (a) poster quoted an entire news article verbatim, (b) poster cited a video game plot from memory). I guess this could also be an optional field, or something.
A truly awesome bonus would be a means of tracking the bibliographical references, and tying that into searches or some kind of reporting tool.
Another awesome bonus would be the option to include the entirety of a written piece in the post, hidden by default but instantly viewable using AJAX or DHTML, upon click or mouseover. This would reduce visual clutter in the message body. (Side-benefit: also usable when quoting long posts on same forum).
Somehow work with one or more of the various vBself-publishing systems such as GARS (http://www.thevbgeek.com/geeker.php?do=displayproduct&id=6) or vB-Drupal.
Compatibility with QuoteIt!.
