View Full Version : What hack do you still want?
I haven't been able to keep as up-to-date with vBulletin as I would have liked, but I wish to create a hack which is in high demand.
My PHP skills have been growing ever since a month or two ago, and I'd like to whip up a quick feature for a true test of where I stand :)
No, don't request something _really_ simple, nor something extremely complex...just something worth a good effort.
I'll bookmark this thread and check it a few times each day.
Thanks,
Here are a few things that would be great:
1. Review script: Perhaps something that would work like:
http://www.audiomarket.com/survey/test/ReviewBoard.cgi
2. News Script: Something that we could use to post news, and then people could reply to it. Ideally if what we put was really long it would split our page over several pages. IE News Page 1, 2 etc. and then people could reply to it.
Thats all I can think of.

The review script is really best customized to a specific item to be reviewed. For example, if I created one for speakers, someone who wanted to use it for cars would have a hard time adapting it. Plus, you're better off starting with a review script and adding a comment feature than starting with vB and adding a full-scale reviewing system.
As for the news system, thats feasable. The only thing thats sort of "iffy" is the multiple page break, but it is possible. My only concern is that some people would want a different setup of the news script than someone else. I'd like to create a universal hack...something everyone can use to its fullest ;)
On the review script couldnt you just make categories & items?
IE Enter category names, and then enter items for the categories?
-Brian
I guess that'd be possible, but that pretty much kills the message board aspect, which I don't want to do.
The script you're referencing, btw, has no UBB-similarities other than the HTML. The backend code is completely different.
Hiya, Stallion. Such a generous offer you've made.
I don't think a news add-on is terribly beneficial for vB. There are many full-fledged PHP news systems existent already that support user comments; it would also be simple to include a link from a news item to comment on a story in your vB forum.
Some suggestions for hacks...
Skins - compress your vB templates into one self-extracting file, allowing users to share their designs without having to manually overwrite each individual template.
Rating system - similar to Slashdot, kuro5hin, et al, with toggleable options to apply ratings to users, threads, individual posts, etc.
Hi,
Maybe something like this.
For instance you've got a large number of categories and you want only to see one category. What you can do is chose that category. But you would still see all others. I know that you won't see all the forums any more, but I was looking for something which would only show that single category with it's forums. Not all the other forums as well.
Got the point? Maybe you could help me get something like this?
{edit}
It looks like this feature is asked by several people. I just searched the board for it once again and I see it show up several times. So could be a hack widely needed, once more a thing found to make a hack that is of worth to a group of users.
Regards,
Erik

for my part, the most in-demand feature on my board would be a bozo filter that would allow users to block seeing posts from other users that they consider objectionable.
to my way of thinking, it will stall have to show that the blocked user posted to keep the flow of the topic, just block the text of the post.
Leaving the post inline would also allow the same button to be used to unblock the poster.
It should also have a list of all the people the person has blocked displayed only when they edit their profile
If youre going to do something, why dont you create a system where people can choose which forums they want to see/subscribe to. Something like a favourites list.
that one would get my vote, too.
a little easier than a functional bozo filter, bt not so easy as to not be a challenge. In fact, a lot of the base subscribe/unsubscribe code could be used in creating the bozo filter :)
My life would become a lot easyer if it was possible to have a forum where the threads were only visible to the moderators and the user who posted the thread.
It would also be great if there was a way to label threads. We're using vbulletin as a support base and it would be great if our users could see a simple label (next to the reply number) that the job will be finished in X days.

Hey, who here uses sp0rk (tinews.net), and has a good version?
It's an enigma to me :)
Simple Hack - Make it so that we have the option to remove the "no icon" from the Message Icons and the Post Icon (grey paper looking icon) is chosen by default if the user does not choose a different icons - assuming message icons are enabled.
