How do I add a custom field for the user to fill out when posting a new thread?

I also want to display this field in the forum display.

I was just wondering if it is possible to do this? I don't need it to display anywhere, I just want to add some fields that a user fills in when submitting a new thread.

Is there an easy way or is just manually programming it. I noticed vbulletin.org has something like it when you submit a new hack.
