It would be cool to have a mod that automatically changed forum permissions once a certain number of guests are lurking the forums....

Say if the number of guests is higher than the members lurking it gives you a no permession please register page.

Just an idea to get more people posting

Simple plugin, but if the number of guests is greater than the number of registered users (on the forumhome only) then no_permission screen is shown...

For more expansion, you'll need to use global hooks, call the online user information globally and it gets messier...

Think very carefully before doing this - it could seriously damage the spidering of your forum by search engines. Our guest count is always higher than actual members, largely due to spiders. It will also block visits from guests if you happen to get linked on a popular site - which won't make you look very good.

Yes - Through expansion of it, however, you can make it so it allows identified spiders on to your site and bypass this :)

Thanks Chris and Paul...

I installed that plugin and it told me I didn't have permission when I went back to my forums so I uninstalled it..... Good points about the Spiders, I get a bunch of them here and I get about 250k + page views per month

I think I am going to hold off on this one at this time but thanks for the responses.

It could be made more intelligent...

I didn't add any clause for if you are registered - I wasn't sure if you wanted it restricted to any groups or just anyone registered...
