fixed AND percentage widths?

I looked around but didn't see anything to this end...
and I tried a few things but stuff just kept breaking...

is there anyway to make the FORUMHOME a fixed width...but the forumdisplays (pages actually within forums---ie:everythign but the forum index page) a percentage width???

am I missing something or do I have to make a request for a hack?

It should be possible with a template edit. I'll check it out for you.

It's not a quick template edit. You're gonna be best off making a hack request.
