I have seen this modification for 3.0, and am kinda dissapointed vBulletin doesn't include it as a feature.
https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=61948&highlight=avatar
And I am wondering if this modification has been made for 3.5, or can be made to work with 3.5.
I don't like to waste bandwith, and pretty much everyone knows about imageshack.us or photobucket.

I'd like this option too..
And I find it hard to understand why vBulletin hasn't implemented this as a feature...

There are two ways of doing this...
1.) Using profile fields: This means you will have to disable avatars and replace data in the postbit with a profile field
2.) Using code mods: This will function similar to the 3.0.x hack
Let me know which way you would prefer and I'll write something up :)

The first way would mean that the 'Show Avatars' setting in the control panel options would no longer work, or better yet: users would no longer have the option to hide avatars...
i'd definately prefer the second option. :)

I don't mind the avatar upload feature on my forum but, would love to have it for profile pics to be hosted remotely.

I can tie in "Show Avatars" and other default vBulletin settings, and can even do a size check on the avatar if you'd like ;)
The only advantage of it's own fields (i.e. Code Mods) is that I can check it on saving the profile - With profile fields, it would have to be checked in every post thus slowing down loading times :)
I'll get to work on this at some point over the weekend hopefully having it finished soon after :)

No 2 for me. As long as they will be able to have a remotely hosted avatar that updates when the image does (ie temperature change in my case) that would be great ;)

I would prefer No. 2.
I find editing the code easier for some reason.
If you could get the code made that would just be great :)

I too can't believe this isn't a default feature in vBulletin by now. I've been requesting it since 2.0.3 =(
I would gladly "donate" to anyone who can develop a bug-free mod that:
Allows remotely hosted avatars
Allow the remote avatars to be hidden with the regular avatars
Checks file size and dimensions of the remote avatar before accepting it
The first two features are manditory, but the third would be very, very appreciated.

With the third? when should it be checked/ just the first time? what if they change it later? What if its animated?
Remotely hosted avatars have a whole load or problems.

Well, the majority will be large, animated gifs. That's why I don't want them uploaded to the forum.
And the file size and dimensions will be checked when they submit the first time. If they change it later to something inappropriate, they can be warned, edit it, etc. The same as if they posted an image and changed it later. That's no reason to not allow hotlinking images in posts.

Yes, It would be nice if it could check the size and dimensions of the avatar, and possible resize the image if needed.
Can someone code this?!
