How Can I learn PHP and MySQL?

I want to be able to do some advanced hacking to my vbulletins. Is it hard to get?
Where can I learn this stuff? Any good books?

CSS59, I'm almost in the same situation as yours. So far I have tried books from sitepoint and mostly tutorials from different websites. I also looked at some tuts at php.net, but only to a certain level their tutorials are understandable for beginners, or at least that's what I thought.

One other thing I could recommend is that if you have a server, set up a test vb forum in a directory called "testvb" and just experiment, or just setup a server on your own comp.

Right now I'm testing out to see how I can pull out the latest submitted photo by a user to his/her profile along with a thumbnail.

As for books, I could recommend you sitepoint because that's the place I bought my own book from, however, there are many other good books which I'm trying to buy within the next month.

Thanks for the pointers. I think I will look into a class at the community college or something. I want to be able to do integrate a social networking site with vbulletin.

Yeah that is always the best option, if there are classes available, I would recommend you take them. As for creating a hack like myspace, I don't know how similar it would be as I don't use myspace, but I'm creating a profile page at the moment where it looks exactly close to deviantart's profile pages. It's just a combination of various hacks such as the webpage & guestbook hack and more custom made ones put all together.

Start by reading some basic tutorials on PHP, then study vB sources for some time. Then go look ow other hacks are made, then finally try your own first steps. This is how most of us learned it.
