I'm thinking of running a board off of my pc, using somthing such s apache.

Now, as you know, other people can view it via my ip, but I can't, as it will be within my network.

So, what im looking for, is a 'multi domain'. I did a search, but from what I saw, all that was asked was 2 different baords, 1 database.

I just want to be able to add multiple domains that see the SAME forums, so i could have, 127.0.0.1, domain.org, and me.no-ip.org if domain.org was not working for any reason

Any links so that I may have a look??

Thanks,
Alex

I believe it will do that without a hack. All you have to do is leave the domain blank in the settings.

I had my site running like this last year.

I had put the main domain details in the vB settings and the second domain resolved to the same place.

In fact the old domain name for the hosting where my new site is, is still active. Take a gander to www.ntlhellworld.com/forums and www.dontgiveashite.com/forums. They are the same site under the new domain which is dontgiveashite.com which is the one used in all my settings. On the portal it redirects you to dontgievashite.com on every link but in the forums itself you stay on which ever domain you have chose (unless you use my navigation as that has been hardcoded with the new domain name in there as it's not a standard navbar)

I would think this would be against TOS as I believe 1 license is good for 1 domain, simple as that, but then again if you have several domains pointing to the same DNS, well, that doesn't mean much, but if the other urls forwarded to the single domain maybe then it would work, but I feel Jelsoft may consider it a method to beat the system.

Hope someone official can help. :)

You aren't copying the software, ergo I can't see how they'd have a problem with it.

/me tries to remember 18 months ago

I seem to recalling asking about it and they said something along the lines of 'if the domain is resolving to the same place and the content, style and everything else is identical then it's ok'.

I'll pull out my licence agreement and see if I can confirm from there.

AFAIK, as long as they resolve to the same forum then it's fine, you are only running one forum, so you only need one license.

The trouble comes if you make some forums only visible on certain domains. Every domain has to show the same forums, if I recall correctly.

Ok here goes

<snip>

vBulletin licence grants you the right to run one instance (a single installation) of the Software on one web server and one web site for each licence purchased. Each licence may power one instance of the Software on one domain. For each installed instance of the Software, a separate licence is required. Modifications to the software or database to circumvent the one-license-one-board rule are prohibited.

In this thread (http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showthread.php?t=158569&highlight=two+domains+one+server) at vB.com cookie domains are being discussed with Jake for a 4 domain 1 site set up.

I hope this answers your questions. Any further stuff may be found in that thread at vB.com or contact support via your members area and they will clarify your proposed set-up
