another great learning resource is a free online e-book that has been published O'Riley. Its better to learn with books if you are a programming newbie, but if your finances are strained like mine was, try this book:

Practical PHP Programming (http://www.hudzilla.org/phpwiki)

it was originally written as a book about 2 years ago, but to keep it up to date with the php language, the author has turned it into a "wiki" book.
