hi - quick question that always puzzled me, but i figured i'd ask for clarification/the answer here.
if i click on install, do i still need to subscribe to the thread?
Only if you want to recive e-mails when there is a reply to the thread. By clicking install you will get updates via e-mail when the author sends them via the 'send update' link.

All Authors, please use "Send Update" function when you update your hacks... sometimes I can see that new version od some plugin is released but I didn't received any info about it.

Same here! Sometimes I receive email about updates, sometimes not.

well my perception is to only use it for emergencies, such as security patches etc.

I only use it if I consider it an update worthy of notification, like new functionality added, not things like a slight change in the instructions, or a non important change that isn't going to bother most people. Also, you will often the the thread has been updated recently, but this can be for anything - the wording of the first post, or even the hack title.
We need to seperate the 'last update' time from the post last edited time. That seems to throw a few people off.
I know I've edited a post or two to fix a link only to have users reply asking what was updated.

hmm, it's not that easy
ok, we can use the most recent attachment dateline as last update date, but, when someone uploads an screenshots that will look as enw update as well..
i'd say we wait until 3.5 ;)

that's a problem as well...
ok in that case we can still use the last edit date

yeah, that was why i was asking. sometimes if i don't subscribe, i miss an update. i just don't want to make sure all my bases are covered. thanks!

maybe a checkbox that says change last mod update timestamp?
then some coders will forget to click it like they now forget to check the appropriate checkboxes (eg uses plugins, supported etc) :(
