View Full Version : Put Adsense Banners in Your Archive
amykhar
11-06-2005, 10:00 PM
UPDATE: THIS PRODUCT NOW ONLY WORKS WITH VERSIONS 3.5.4 AND 3.6 AND UP. I WILL NOT RE-RELEASE THE OLDER VERSION.
This product is a simple one that will get you started in adding Google adsense banners to the top and bottom of your archive pages:
Demo here: http://www.eaforums.com/forums/archive/index.php/
To install: Import the product. Change the two plugins to use the adsense code for your site (instead of mine - unless you are feeling generous) and to arrange its positioning as desired.
To upgrade: Uninstall the old product. Install the new one.

Another great job Amy -
Ive listed the hack at vBulletin Webmaster (http://www.vbwebmaster.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1549) - This is a good hack as it makes monitizing the forum archive easy to do.
As a note, your not limited to only adsense ads folks. You can use this hacvk to place anything in the header or footer of your archive. For example, your website banner or other banner ads. However, I dont recommend adding a whole bunch of graphics. The idea is to have a lean, mean copy of your forum for Google, Yahoo and other search engines to crawl easily.

If there are no ads available for your content, the footer may be blank. Try browsing around your archive and see if it ever shows.

I recently installed this adsense plugin for the archive and it works great. However, I noticed the newer xml install in later posts of this thread that includes the google search and has a column on the right for additional adense ads.
My impressions have gone up but my eCPM has gone down. It's too early to say for sure but I am thinking 3 ads on the archive page may be too many. It is causing the eCPM to drop quite a bit. My earnings have been lower for the last 3 days. I'll leave it for a couple more days before I re-install the first version.
Any thoughts on this?
cinemablend
12-29-2005, 02:31 PM
So question...
In the archive, how are you getting google to index past the first page of threads?
Google is only indexing the 250 threads on page one of each forum, it's not indexing anything past that for me.
I guess I can set the thread count per page so high that they're all on one page, but I notice that on a lot of other people's pages the threads on deeper pages ARE getting indexed.
What's your secret?

I don't know what you are asking here. You have not control of what adds are going to be display on the page. The adds are picked but google. Google reads the content of your page and finds adds from that fit that content of your page.

No, no. I figured it out now, but what I didn't understand before is that I had to go into the plugin manager to control the ad content. that was my question.
I do have a new question now though, I installed the revised edition that is suppoed to assist in the skyscraper on the right hand side, but I don't see any option to put one in. Can someone please explain a brief detail how to add the skyscraper to the right hand column?
Much appreciated, thank you.

Each banner should have a different channel asigned to it or it won't serve more than one add set to the same page. But even then you may get blanks if it can't find anything to serve.

Question on the hack... works great by the way. What is the value of adding the search box to the archive? Isn't that giving vistors a way off your page without going to your site, or one of your ads? I don't see the benefit of doing that.
amykhar
01-27-2006, 06:24 PM
The search box also pays. For us, it works if somebody finds us from google, and we're not quite what they thought they'd find. They just retype their query in the box and leap off to keep looking. It allows us to capitalize on traffic that was leaving anyway.
nice hack amy... thanks :-)

find this part in archive bottom
<td width=\"15%\" valign=\"top\">
your code here

then move it to archive header
between this
<table width=\"100%\" border=\"0\" cellpadding=\"4\" cellspacing=\"0\">

Hmm... well, that got the ads to the left of the page, but now theyre acting as a buffer between the top ads and the archived content. Like theyre just stacked in between the top ads and the archived thread. Theyre not actually to the left of the content as i was hoping.
Any other ideas?

You entered an area where only top brains are at work and they don't have time for people like you - I too was perplexed, because they only use secret language that people who spend all their time with code understand.
I got it to work once I understood what "escape the code" meant. You have to find every instance of your google code where it says " and put \" in it's place. It's an easy thing to miss.

Or the writer of the plugin could indicate the problem in a file with the download, or the post with the download, as the whole point of the download is to get the google ads to work in the archives.
It could also be explained in a language that normal people could understand.

You can't just copy/paste your whole adsense code block.
You need to take your adsense code block from google and do a search and replace on all of the " - you need to replace them with \" before you load the xml file.

3.5.4 changed the way the Archive works; that's why this is no longer compatible with 3.5.3.

Is this breaking the Google ToS .?

No. It's not a violation.
Works great. Good idea! Cheers
No. It's not a violation.
Actually, I think it is a violation of the Adsense TOS to modify the code they generate for you in any way (including escaping quotes).
I've read responses from Google employees that say just this.
It's too bad that they changed the archive coding to require escapes.
amykhar
04-07-2006, 09:51 AM
rrr, you don't have to escape them if you use the single quotes. I am using double quotes because some other ad code I rotate in uses single quotes. But on the html page, the escapes don't show. There'd be no way to use google code in many other software packages if you didn't use escapes.

I understand that. Just passing on what I read from a Google employee.
If the adcode is modified in anyway, they consider it a violation of the TOS.
Now are they going to notice 99.9% of the time or is it as bad as other TOS violations? Probably not.
Just passing on what I've learned for those who might care :)

04-21-2006, 01:34 PM
Don't know.The answer is no, the archive was re-written in 3.5.4 to use $output, not echo statements, so this won't work in a patched 3.5.3. You could however upload the 3.5.4 archive files without upgrading the rest of the forum.

Great hack Amy. <plug>I think it compliments my postbit mod (https://vborg.vbsupport.ru/showthread.php?t=98057) quite really well</plug> :)
One suggestion I have is that you could use PHP's "heredoc" syntax to avoid having to quote any of the ad calls.
If you used:
$output .= <<<EOBANNER
Google adsense code goes here
...
...
...
end adsense code
EOBANNER;
Then no escaping is required, the code can just be pasted in from Google's adsense interface without having to check for/escape single or double quotes.

Thank you for this hack. Installed. :)
I was wondering if there's any way to add a conditional where the ads wouldnt show if they are browsing the forum as registered, moderator, supermod, or admin usergroups? ...or alternatively, if they are logged in or click the pdf link.
I think you have to be logged in to use the pda feature and for those people who do want to use this feature, I'd like it to not show those ads if possible.
Also, I just noticed that if I go to archive/index it shows all three ads..but if i got to a specific thread it only shows the top ad and search with no side or bottom ads. Is this how it's supposed to work?
Thank you.

You missed a bunch of quotes. EVERY internal quote must have a \ in front of it.
OR change the external quotes to single quotes.
The internal ones are the ones that are in the google code itself. The external ones are the ones in the first and last lines of the plugin code.
I am leaving the mod with the escaped quotes version because many of us use alternative ads in addition too google and the other ad code uses single quotes.

They make it much easier to paste code in without having to escape everything.

Oh, where are my manners...
Great mod!!!!
Thanks Amy :D
It looks fantastic!
I have one tip for people, don't forget to create a custom channel called "Forum Archive" or something, so that when you generate the code for these ads it will track them properly. I get a lot of traffic on my archived pages, from people searching for information. But it can be really useful to know how much of your Adsense revenue is coming from the archive, and how much is coming from your regular forum (assuming you have ads there).
If I remember, in a few weeks I might post a followup here to show what percentage of my revenue came from the Archive, it might be useful information for someone.

How can you add a conditional to this hack so the adsence banners will only be shown to certain usergroups you choose:
IE: Usergroups 1,3,4
Can this be done, or does it not recognize conditionals because it's in the archive pages.
amykhar

You can check for usergroup memberships, but not with template conditional syntax.
MRGTB
01-16-2007, 08:53 PM
So does that mean you could not use this for example to show the banners to just 3 usergroups then.
<if condition="is_member_of($bbuserinfo, 1, 3, 4)">
As I'm not sure what you meant in your last post. If that would work, I'm not sure were I would add the code though exactly in the XML file.

In the plugin, you could use if(is_member_of($vbulletin->userinfo,1,3,4)){
} around any instance of the ad banners. I don't bother with it because my members don't use the archives.

yea I know what you mean about members not using the archives, I thoguht about that also. But I think I would still rather exclude the banners from them anyway just in-case. As you never know.
So that code you posted above, would I just wrap that around the adsence code only.
Would it then look like this:
if(is_member_of($vbulletin->userinfo,1,3,4)){
}
Adsence code
</if>

This is a great modification. Thanks.
Please be sure to remove the author's Google Adsense code and place your Google Adsense code on this modification.
If you are unsure how to do this, download this modification and open it with notepad.
Then look for her codes and replace them with yours.
Thank you.

Great hack Amy. Thanks for sharing. Only thing I noticed, and I could be doing this wrong is that the ads only display on the index archive page. Once I click on a section or topic, no ads.

Amy. I'm trying to browse your archives to see this in use but whenever I click on an actual thread, it takes me to the interactive version. :confused:
This would be a wild guess but from looking at the redirected url, it's adding keywords to the end... perhaps you have a mod which does this, which is causing it?
To give you an example; if I click on the link
http://www.eaforums.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-2769.html,
it takes you to
http://www.eaforums.com/forums/computers-science-technology/2769-i-stole-name-forum.html
I guess it's going to hurt your earnings, so I thought I ought to bring it to your attention. :)

It worked great and - by the way - I just added my google analytics script right after the adsense and all is working perfectly after a set up of only a few minutes.

I just want to add my thanks to amykhar on this hack. I read through all the posts on this long thread to sort out what was what. In the end, simply uninstall the previous version and reinstall the current download from post #1 and it works great!

Superb Amy if you don't mind me saying :)
A reminder to any users to REMEMBER to edit the xml file to show your google publisher details before you import the product, I opened the xml file using notepad - changes shown below:
Change the google_ad_client = "pub-YOUR PUBLISHER ID NUMBER HERE";
Change the google_ad_channel =""; to google_ad_channel ="YOUR AD CHANNEL HERE";
Easiest way to find these details is to view the source code where any Google ads are showing on your forum and simply copy and paste the details - Remember you need a channel for this to work, though it can be the same one that you are already using on the site though I guess you won't know exactly how much money the archive pages are generating because they will be lumped in with the rest of the ads on the forum.
To any folks out there wondering how to install this xml file:
Go to AdminCP > Manage Products and click on [Add/Import Product] then browse for the XML file and press the Import button.
If I can do it then anyone can do it ;)
For info I'm running 3.6.8 PL2

ok, I just installed it and made sure to replace my pub id but when I go to the archive page no ads show up.
If I check the source of the archive page it shows google ad source code. just no ads are showing up.
Any ideas on this?
thanks.

nevermind. I guess it just takes a few minutes for google to find the ads and start displaying them. it seems to be working fine now.
Thank you very much for this plug-in.
So do you recomend showing the archives to visitors or having them linked directly to the actual thread?

Seems to be working with 3.7 Betas. Thanks, Amy. :)
This works great Amy, thanks! Is it at all possible to get the ads to display within the archive box rather than above it, beside it and below it? I would prefer a 300x250 ad format and it be placed within the box of the archive. Thanks!

Glow, you probably messed up when you made your edits to use your own ad code. Reinstall it and try it without edits first. If it works then, CAREFULLY edit the code to use your ad banners.
hello amy, i am new in here i mean in the world of coding and forums. i dont know how to edit codes. i have learnt how to import a product, but i do not know how to edit and where to edit ..... i would want my adsense to appear just below navbar in the center, every page. and in the bottom, just below every statistics in page center..............just like GM diesel showed his page in your article.
can you please help me to figure out how to edit the product?
thank you
