is a product just a plugin with a few hook locations? if so is their a template for it at all?

A product includes templates, phrases, settings, plug-ins, etc. Anything attached to the product will be in it. ;)

oh ok, is their any sort of template as i noticed i was being invited to upload an xml file

Not really a set template. Take a look at my Last 15 Searches hack for 3.5. That will give you an idea of what a product does. As long as phrases and templates (which must be made in the Master set) are attached to a product, they will be included. The same goes for the other stuff.

Maybe I'm not totally understnading what you are asking. I apologize if I'm not. :(
