View Full Version : e-steki Smilie Maker 1.7

http://www.e-steki.com/images/smmaker.gif
This modification allows you to create personalized smilies by choosing eyes, mouth and face. The smilie set that was used for the graphics is one of the most popular and beautiful ones (see screenshots). It is possible to create up to 18000 different smilies for this so hours of fun are guaranteed! Additionaly, it includes plugins for custom WOL location, so that they don't show up as unknown and a handy bbcode (bbcode example: [smilie=1,2,3]) to put those smilies in posts. There is a field in the smilie maker which displays the bbcode that should be used so that the user can copy it from there. Every action is made via javascript so that the page does not reload. It is fully phrased so translations are now a piece of cake! :)
DEMO: http://www.e-steki.com/forum/smmaker.php (http://www.e-steki.com/forum/smmaker.php?langid=1) (Note that the demo is in greek. However as there is not much text in this hack, you'll probably find your way :))
Important:You need GD enabled in your server to use this (and almost all image-creating-on-the-fly mods so you better tell them to enable it if they haven't already :p) Also this doesn't work in some forums that have the hack for transparent pngs in IE.
Installation
-1 product file which adds 5 plugins, 1 template, 4 AdminCP settings and 15 phrases.
-2 php file uploads
-1 folder with images upload
-1 small template edit
Detailed instructions are included in the accompanying zip file.
Please be kind and click INSTALL if you have installed this mod. I *can* see this you know! :p
I hope you enjoy this mod as much as I enjoyed making it :)
Changelog:
Version 1.7
-Made the tables for the eyes, mouth and face collapsible
-Added 15 more eyes, 15 more mouths and 2 more faces
-Added text to show till a smilie is made so that the user doesn't think that nothing is happening. The text disappears after the creation of the smilie.
-Fixed the bug with the preview of the BBcode.
Version 1.6
-Added AdminCP option to hide the creation buttons to guests and show a message instead
-Added AdminCP option to hide the bbcode editbox so that forums with a lot of traffic don't get a big server load from many dynamic smilies. (to completely disable the functionality though you have to disable one plugin and not perform the suggested template edit)
Version 1.5
-Added Random Smilie button
-Added bbcode like [smilie=1,2,3] to use custom smilies in posts. Beware that this may be server-intensive in big forums.
-Editbox that displays the bbcode that should be copied, which also changes with javascript instantly.
-Fully phrased now
-Template and phrase addition is done with the attached product
-Link in the smilie popup to the smilie maker
-Custom WOL locations
-A lot shorter image URL
As english is not my native language I may have done some grammar mistakes. I would really appreciate it of you reported them in this thread :)
Thanks to KW802's mod for inspiring me on how to use the javascript. :)

Thanks! I'm glad you find it nice! :D
(I was really exited when I had the idea, lol)
For written message you can look on KW802's mod for 3.0.7 (it works in 3.5 as well). but the faces are predefined in his mod. The only thing that changes is the text and colours of it. Maybe I could make one that combines both features but I don't have that much php knowledge at the time :) I'm a fast learner though :p

Probably it will be easy for you as the code in mine is very small and easy :)
Pleeease if you make that, include the fonts and not take them from the server so that it supports greek! :nervous:

HHmm.... I hadn't thought about different fonts before.
OK, challenge accepted! :p Is there a Greek truetype font?
A lot but only some work with gd as I noticed. However all the preinstalled fonts in windows work with GD AND greek so something like comic sans ms, times, arial etc would work.
I can send you some. However the good thing of not taking the fonts from the server is that the user can change them so that he can put whatever he wants. For example in MpDev's graffiti wall it needed only an iconv() function to convert the sent values to UTF-8 and the replacement of the graffiti fonts of the package with greek ones.
So this way it would support any given language I guess ;) You don't need to specifically make it work with greek ;)
However I don't know how it would be possible to make the box be resized to fit the writing if the user had changed the font... I tried to change the code of your existing hack to support greek (with the help of a friend of mine that knows php very well) and the box was messed up and he told me that it needed lots of coding to make it resize corrtectly... :confused:

Yep, I started from your template but I erased most of the stuff there so that I only had the module shell and some similar things and also I took a look of how the javascript worked to understand how I should make mine, is that bad? You can see that there aren't many similarities ;) Also the php file is completely different... I hope you aren't accusing me of stealing because of some html comments! :speechless:

I hope you aren't accusing me of stealing because of some html comments! :speechless:I was pretty happy with myself the night I figured out how to get the image to refresh without a page load so if somebody else was able to make use of that code then even cooler. :cool:
Going back to the fonts though... I'll have to experiment to see I come up with. I've never really worked with non-Latin fonts before so it'll be a learning experience for me. Did your friend keep any of his experimental changes? I'd be curious to see how far he got.

Yep, I have the changed php file but I have it in a backup DVD as I had to format the pc due to a problem it had and if I start searching for the backup DVD at 6 in the morning the people in the house will yell at me :p :p :p
So, I'll send it to you tomorrow :) How should I send it? PM, e-mail or posting it here? :)
I remember that it worked nicely with greek but the box was bigger than it should be :confused:

Installed the non vbadvanced version :-
"you do not have permission to access this page" .. where are the permission settings ?
That's really weird cause... there are no permission settings!
Are you sure you were pointing to the correct url? It's www.yourdomain.com/forums/smmaker.php
Anyway, I did this too fast due to demand and is very possible I overlooked something... I'll have a look when I fix something in the look of the template. :)
I'll send an update when I sort those issues out :)
Sorry .. must have been deleting post as you posted .. problem solved.
Had initially installed the vba version and not set permissions for the new page.
I tried both and I get a red x instead of the created smilie. :(

Can you right click the red X and paste here the url that the browser is searching to find the image in? :)
Btw the zip file of the non-vba version is now updated to contain a slightly better template (see screenshots)
Also now the screenshots are from an english, default version of vbulletin :)

Yes, I do.
Version? I'm not sure but I think it requires 1.6 or more for some of the functions used...
If you go at the image's url you'll see a bunch of php warnings.
The problem is that the script for some reason, cannot use the images and all the other warnings come from that issue. What I can't determine is WHY it cannot open the images... It could be a fault chmod but since I can see them they are readable and do exist. :confused:
I'll think about it more and post when I think something that could be causing this apart from an old gd version... Btw I know there are more important issues about the smilie maker than looks but there is a template update, you are having the old template :)

That's pretty self-explanatory I guess... I think you should ask your host for that since it's a server problem :(
The other warnings are caused by only 3 of the first ones similar to the one I quoted. Since the file doesn't load, each time the script uses the variable that contains it's contents you get an error ;)

Alternatively, it would be great if the Javascript could also output the appropriate [IMG] tags for the smilie so a user can just copy and paste the code to put in a post. You could even put a 'Copy [IMG] code' button there which would copy the appropriate code to the user's clipboard, saving them from having to highlight the code and click copy.

Alternatively it could just save the dynamic image code (perhaps it could be made a little shorter?) to a MySQL table and then display it in the user's smilie panel.
There could even be a Control Panel page where users could see the smilies they've created, choose to display them in their smilie panel, or choose to delete them.
Suggestions, suggestions ;) I think those are good ideas though.
Edit: Whoa how have I possibly been on this board for four years now... :S

Depends on how many smilies a user can make. It can always be limited. For a medium sized board I think it's entirely sustainable, so long as we don't have to store the entire smilie URL that the current Smilie Maker outputs. The code could probably be easily edited to output much more abbrieviated URLs than it currently does.
And yes, at 91 posts in 4 years I am a world class lurker ;)

As I said in my first post one can create up to 6000 different smilies. Imagine if all these were stored in your server including a bbcode shortcut for each smilie! Also, why would a user have a different smilie panel than others since they will see the smilie anyway? ;)

In the vba version it depends on the page identifier you have set and on an on another setting (which I don't currently remember how it's called). If you have vbadvanced you should be able to create a custom page and know the link for it! :rolleyes:

Alternatively, it would be great if the Javascript could also output the appropriate [IMG] tags for the smilie so a user can just copy and paste the code to put in a post. You could even put a 'Copy [IMG] code' button there which would copy the appropriate code to the user's clipboard, saving them from having to highlight the code and click copy.
I have thought of that and yes it would be great BUT: The link to the image would be dynamic. e-steki_smilie_creator.php would have to be called to create the image each time a user sees that smilie in the post causing a huge server load, especially in big forums... I don't know exactly how bad that would be for the server (anyone that does?) but yes, I would like that feature a lot too. Oh, also note that if you choose not to care about the poor server (:p) and use such smilies in a post then be sure to have dynamic images enabled in vbulletin options :)
If anyone uses these let me know if the forum went any slower. I I figure out it's not THAT heavy for the server, it's certain I'll put such a feature in. :)

If you had enough users making their own smiles, that might be a lot of smilies on the server. I think this hack is more for Admins to make smilies for their site than for users, or am I wrong? ;)
Yes you are, sure it's good for admins but I have noticed that users have a lot of fun with this as well :)

Make an AdminCP ver
* once the smile is made you have a choice to save the smile in a $path (set somewere)
* Before you save take your finished Smile and add it to the database.
Title
Text to Replace
Smilie File Path
Smilie Category
Display Order

Same with Gizmo5h1t3 (http://member.php?u=107529). The html code is different in you guys than in the other members that don't have the problem. See for example an img tag from Allan's module:
<img src="http://www.phylosophia.com/forum/images/smilies/e-steki_smilie_creator/eyes/6.png" alt="" border="0">
And one from Gizmo5h1t3:

As I said in my first post one can create up to 6000 different smilies. Imagine if all these were stored in your server including a bbcode shortcut for each smilie! Also, why would a user have a different smilie panel than others since they will see the smilie anyway? ;)
- We could limit each user to having 5-10 custom smilies stored for their account. If on average every user had 3 smilies, even if 1000 users used the smilie maker it wouldn't be so bad.
- The idea behind having a different smilie panel per user would be due to users probably not wanting to have other peoples' smilies cluttering their edit window.
These are just suggestions, but I think that this modification has a lot of potential. Currently it isn't *really* integrated into vbulletin.

If you saw my above post, the new version will include new features and one of them will be a bbcode installed via a plugin which would enable the users to use custom smilies in their posts. Also, a link will be displayed in the smilie popup window to the smilie maker so that if the user doesn't find a suitable image there he can just create one and copy the bbcode from the editbox ;)
And since I'll make that plugin I'll also probably add the phrases at this point and make it all a product :)
btw the vba version will be discontinued. There is no point having it as it can be made as a page anyway, with the classic vba way ;)

You can always replace some of the images with yours. Also if you know how to handle templates you can easily add more eyes/mouths/faces without altering a single thing in the php code or in the javascript. It just needs basic html skills and observation. :)

There is no point having it as it can be made as a page anyway, with the classic vba way ;)For the BB code, make sure that people understand that by generating the image on the fly every time the page loads that their server could take a performance hit if the forum is a high-volume site. That's one of the reasons why I resisted doing that for the sign maker version and instead started exploring ways of saving the image to the server first and then linking to the saved version instead of generating a new one every time. ... For vBa, the original thought process behind that one was to make it easier to manager which usergroups had access to it. :)

Nope but why would you restrict any usergroup apart from guests to seiing this?
There is that setting for guests which I think is better than completely restricting them to view the page, banned users can't see the forum so they can't view this either...
So what's the use of having usergroup permissions? :)

Hi just installed it, its working but a few things:
1 - If i click to preview a post before posting, the smilie code is not translated
2 - By default your creator loads in the same window as the smilie manager (which is a small javascript popup) - I had to add a target="_blank" to the create link
3 - and how big is a forum which shouldn't use this due to server load?
4 - oh yeah, and the modules folder doesn't exist so it needs to be created (this is unclear in the instructions)
cheers!

3 - and how big is a forum which shouldn't use this due to server load?
4 - oh yeah, and the modules folder doesn't exist so it needs to be created (this is unclear in the instructions)
cheers!

Thanks for installing, I hope your users like it :)
1. This is because the plugin for the bbcode is in a postbit hook locations so it parses the bbcode only when it's posted. Thanks for pointing it out, will be fixed in the next version :)
2. Also a correct point. There is also the solution of making the smilie popup initially bigger but it's a messy solution. I'll add the target="_blank" in the readme of the next version. Thanks again :)
3. I don't know exactly. My forum has about 650 members and it seems very ok. I guess you'll know you're big enough when you notice a performance slowdown. It also depends on how many users are using it. :)
4. It existed in my test forum which had almost no hacks so I thought it would exist in others too. I'll put a notice in the next version's readme :)

Well its only been on a little while and already everyone is so happy :D hehe....
I had one more question, if in the future it does slow down too much, so i remove it - will the posts be littered with [smilie] links, or will they stay hidden?
Oh and would it be possible to remove the page from the modules folder, I don't like creating folders unless necessary?
But I love it, thanks a lot :D
Lea Verou
11-09-2005, 06:05 PM
Oh if you remove the page from the modules directory you have to change the URL in the template (in a javascript function). I don't remember the url of that php file being used anywhere else but my memory isn't very good :p
It was originally created only or vbadvanced users and this is why there is that strange "modules" thing still there. I was too lazy to change it :p Maybe I will put it in the images folder in the next version :)
About the bbode, that a nice question! I'll test it in my test forum and see what happens if I disable the plugin and I'll try to include something better about that in the next version.
Thanks a lot for your comments, they are really useful! :)

I'm still installed... Not having any problems here ;-)
Can I suggest a few things for future versions?
- More smilie graphics, i.e. eyes, mouth, face. How about hands / items?
- Have you seen the application that allows you to customise the text on a sign that the smilie is holding? If these two could come together then it would most definitely be the ultimate smilie maker out there.

-Don't you think it would get stuffed if I put more images there? It's way too big already...
Anyway those eyes/mouths are stripped from the original smilies of that set that I could find so I don't have any more to strip their eyes and mouth from :nervous:
-KW802 said in above posts that he will combine those two. I believe though that if it was like that it would become more specific and users would be able to use them on special occasions (a smilie holding a sign doesn't fit anywhere, right? ;) ). Also, there would always be those "smartass" users that would post their whole post in a smilie and put the smilie instead of text cause they will think it's "cool" therefore causing serverload.
-I had also thought of hands/items and it's a good idea. However I'll have to save all the images again at a larger size and find enough items to add. It would be no use if we only had like 3 items, would it? ;) And I don't want to put ugly stuff from other smilie sets as items, I'm quite picky with looks :p

If you read the whole thread then you wouldn't have that question. Just create the folder.
About bandwidth, I guess it's the same as a normal png 8-bit smilie of that size. When I say "server load" I am not referring to bandwidth but to CPU usage.
Anyway, if you install it, please click the appropriate button ;)

Are you taking suggestions? How about a way to upload more custom images and add them to the default set via the AdminCP?

Yes I am taking suggestions but I can't make them all, even if they are nice ideas. I am not a php guru! :)
How do you imagine your suggestion working? I didn't fully understand what you suggested. :o
Since you like that modification that much, please click install!
I have said before that in the next version I'll update the readme or even move the file to the images of smilies folder if that won't affect the existing ones in the board (which I don't think it will as they are created each time they are viewed).
However I'm currently working on another hack so I don't think the update will be very soon. That's not certain however. It could be out in a day. It depends on if I feel like coding the new hack or the update of this at a time. :nervous:

Well you have some default smilie parts that come with the package, but what if you want to add some faces or eyes of your own? I was thinking of an easy way to do so, like via the AdminCP for instance. Your upload your smilie part, and then it is added to the list of parts you can use in the Smilie Customiser.
It was just something that came to mind, that's all. It's one of my favourite mods just as it is :)

I would really like to include animated graphics but that needs Imagemagick installed in the host. How many people do have that installed? I don't think there are many... :(

Wouldn't it be possible to just choose to disable animated parts from the AdminCP? Just stop them showing up if you don't have Imagemagick? It will also include more eyes/mouths (and perhaps faces) in addition to the other features it will contain :)
New features will also include a text that will show till the smilie loads (eg "Smilie is being made - Please wait") and a fix for the preview bug. :)
Progress
-Preview bug...Fixed (added 2 more plugins)
-Mesage while the smilie is being created...Complete (added one more phrase)
-Creating extra mouths,faces,eyes...Complete (final number of images for this version: 45 eyes, 40 mouths and 10 faces (also touched up an existant face)
-Editing template to adapt the new number of particles...Done
-Editing tables to make them collapsable...Done
-Making version ready to be posted here...Done.

I dont have this installed as far as i know if i have i cant find it lol
Q: I don't see the eyes/lips/faces images although the application works correctly and the smilie is shown.
A: You have the hack for transparent pngs in IE, huh? Well, deactivate it. ;-)
BTW i only use IE i dont like FF :(
Please advise as i have read through this whole thread but theres nothing that helps me, that i could see....
Regards
Bashy
Ermmm for me it doesn't show anything at all in the smmaker page in IE (in fact IEtab) just the page background :confused:
What do you see? Which images are missing?

Τhe smilie is produced correctly? What other hacks do you have?
bashy
01-02-2006, 07:47 PM
What dont i have :o can you not see the hacks ive installed in my profile?
But i aint got that png one, not that i can see anyway, dont even know where it is on here...
But should a hack cause this issue if it works ok on FF?
Bashy

Yes it is possible that a hack is conflicting with the smilie maker, and no I cannot see the hacks you have installed if they are not mine (and even if they are, I still wont be able to see them if you haven't posted in their thread)

bashy try deactivating the SEO hacks and the rewrite url one and tell me if it gets solved.
N8 yes it will. I forgot to update the version :)
Hi there, is it possible to get the faces pngs with real alpha blending for use on dark backgrounds also? Because they show some not so nice white borders on left and right top and bottom of the faces picture if you view them on a darker background. Attached image is self-explaining.

AFAIK GD doesn't go well with alpha transparency :(
Internet Explorer also hates it :(

I just felt like I would show this off. It took me a few solid days of work to modify this, but it was necessary on our forums as we use the old vb2 style of smilies. While changing it, I felt it would be nice to include a lot more options as well as an additional Eyebrow category for that extra touch. You can see some of the examples too, 74 out of over 57 million possibilities. :)

You can find some real nice code snippets for working with alpha transparency on www.php.net function list (in the comments to the functions) :)
I just felt like I would show this off...
Is there a way to get some of your faces images. Im running the forum on a dark background, which would match perfectly.

Thanks, I didn't know such functions existed. However I'm too busy these days (months?) for coding...
Also, even if he gives you the faces images they have to be the correct size (even if that means just some transparent space). You have to understand how the smilie maker works. If you understand it then customization is really simple :)

First off, very cool. :)
What i think would be better, and something I would like to do, is add a direct link to the maker that opens a second window to the maker while using the posting editor, so people can make their smilie at the same time as they are posting, so they can copy and paste the code directly into their post.
How would I be able to do this? Not sure which templates would be needed to modify. Just a direct link where the smilie's are displayed would work fine. (Including the drop down menu as well) This should then be fine for PM's etc as well. :)
Oh, and quick reply I guess.
Pretty fun though. :D

I did that in my forum if I understood you correctly but I don't remember which template it was. I'll look and tell you :)

Thanks, don't speak Greek, so couldn't see. :)
I should remember it, but the insane amount of templates VB uses gets you confused sometimes. :(

You should change the editor_smiliebox template.
Here's mine:
<if condition="$show['smiliebox']">
<fieldset id="{$editorid}_smiliebox" title="$vbphrase[smilies]">
<legend>$vbphrase[smilies]</legend>
<table cellpadding="4" cellspacing="0" border="0" align="center">
$smiliebits
<if condition="$show['moresmilieslink']">
<tr>
<td class="smallfont" colspan="$vboptions[smcolumns]">[<a href="#" onclick="vB_Editor['$editorid'].open_smilie_window(smiliewindow_x, smiliewindow_y); return false" title="<phrase 1="$vboptions[smtotal]" 2="$totalsmilies">$vbphrase[showing_x_smilies_of_y_total]</phrase>">$vbphrase[more]</a>]</td>
</tr>
<div class="smallfont"><a href="$vboptions[bburl]/smmaker.php" target="_blank">$vbphrase[smmaker_smiliepopup]</a></div>
</if>
</table>
</fieldset>
<else />
<div id="smiliebox" style="display:none"></div>
</if>

Has anyone got the same smilie pack/faces for boards using dark skins?

Pick the ones you want. :) Remember, if you end up wanting to use more than what's normally in the hack, you'll have to modify the template to include the higher numbers. I had to do that plenty of times. :p
One note: My image size is different from the normal hack's size, optimised for the rest of my images, so you'll most likely need to adjust your other face parts to fit on these properly. ;)

Actually, I noticed something with this, and had to switch it off because of it. It doesn't reconize permissions and usergroups. Even though I am a admin, when I go to the page, it shows me as a guest (register username/password shows up)
A member logged in using that, and totally buggered up his status for the rest of the board, he had to log out and relog back in. Any ideas on how to fix this?

i get Internal Server Error... how do i fix this?? Anyone overcome this issue?
Nevermind, fix it... had permission problems...

Why would you do that?
